The Pandorica Opens Food for Thought

Frank Collins' intriguing book Doctor Who: The Pandorica opens is an intriguing mix of insight and context into Series 5 of Doctor Who.

Series 5 is the first year viewers see Matt Smith in the role of this iconic Doctor. The use of the Pandorica in the title is a message in itself. Like Pandora's Box of mythology, what the Pandorica itself holds, in Doctor Who, is perhaps not what one might expect, and can be used in a way that one also might not expect.

Viewers and fans of Doctor Who may have their own opinions about the new Doctor, about the direction of the series under Mr. Steven Moffat, writer and now producer of the show. That is as it should be. Mr. Collins, a self-acknowledged fan, demonstrates his knowledge of the episodes, both current and "classic", and his ability to weave together both in context, with connections between classic and current in scenes, bits of dialogue, and character. Mr. Collins also aptly and ably provides an understanding of the symbolism and significance of the current characters, based on the analyses of fairy-tale, mythology, fantasy literature, and just perhaps a good dose of common sense observation of how people interact (in this sense, even the Doctor is considered "people"!)

This reader does not always relish reading reviews of episodes by other individuals. Enjoyment of a book or tv show is often a very personal matter, and not every fan will agree on every point. I am also not at all knowledgeable about how fairy-tale and fantasy speak to the human psyche. I generally just enjoy watching Doctor Who because--well--I find the Doctor's character (in any regeneration, but admittedly especially now) engaging, charming, whimsical, boyish--and a few other adjectives. After reading Doctor Who: The Pandorica Opens, I have somewhat more of an appreciation for the creative process behind the character, for the dynamic of the show, for the vision of the storyteller, and the talent of the actor. I do marvel that with many of his points, it felt like he had been in my own head, as we agreed on many. Even where we disagreed, and yes there were a few--I have my own opinion of the character of River Song and her place in the story frame, for example--I do really appreciate the new insights from various areas of psychology and myth-study.

I hope that Mr. Collins plans more analyses of some kind for the show.

Although the reader might not always find themselves agreeing with all of the author's findings - I guarantee that even during those rare instances of disagreement, they will still find themselves appreciative of the intelligence with which they find their views challenged.

Make no mistake; I'm convinced that this is an important book in the field of not just Doctor Who, but also of media criticism as a whole. Frank Collins is not only to be applauded for presenting us with a volume worthy of the quality of the series it addresses - but also for throwing wide the door allowing us a different way of looking at it.

To say that I await the author's next work with keen anticipation would be an understatement.

Daniele Bolelli has carved out an odd place for himself in popular culture: University professor, MMA fighter, homespun philosopher and single-parent father, his disarming honesty and bravery in not just fighting but life itself is an inspiration. "Not Afraid" is by far his most personally revealing book and for the many fans of his podcasts, it's going to be an expected treat. For those new to Bolelli, don't be afraid, listen to him and hear yourself reacting to his incredible insights into how to live a life full of challenges and thrive despite the occasional beat down. Highly recommended!!

I had a hard time putting it down, took me two days to read. Emotionally wrenching at parts, brutally honest and motivates one to face fear in whatever form it takes head on. You will laugh, fight back tears and come away feeling a loss that it is finished.

This is a really great book

This book could not have had more of an impact on me if Prof. Bolelli had thrown it at my head. The hardcover version not the paperback. If you don't read this book, and let it into your soul, YOU have given up on leading anything other than a beige colored life. Please don't be beige. Also, there is an audio version of this that is africkinmazing as the good Prof narrates it himself. Its like listening to a being from another multiverse, in a good way. Buy it from him website, it may just change your life.

The Best Spiritual Arrangements

The late Moses Hogan was the finest arranger of African American spirituals to ever take on the craft. This book is full of incredible (and difficult) piano parts that paint beautiful and exciting stages for long time favorites. The arrangements of "Motherless Child," He's Got The Whole World In His Hands," and "He Never Said Mumblin' Word" and particularly wonderful. If you are looking for rich and lush arrangements this book is for you.

I just received the 1st of two books I ordered from Amazon today written by Kim Arcand and Megan Watzke! "Light The Visible Spectrum and Beyond" and all I can say is WOW! This hardcover book is Spectacular in Every Detail from the Unbelieveable Images to the Accompanying Narratives that describe each Aspect of Light in Fine Detail! I thought I knew something about light since I've been a photographer all of my life and have a high-level of interest in Astronomy and the Sciences, but I've never seen another book like it! I have to consider this book the entire "Encyclopedia of Light!" It's a MUST HAVE for all Astronomers, Astrophotographers, Cosmologists, Physicists, or anyone else interested in learning about the many Fascinating Properties of Light! Purchase this well-written book for yourself or as a gift for your child, a family member or friend! You will not be disappointed! Kim Arcand works for NASA as a Visualization lead for the Chandra X-Ray Telescope and Megan Watzke works at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. The images in this book are absolutely stunning! What an absolutely top quality book. It's beautiful as a physical object and packed with fascinating information. I also love that the authors are women, as women in STEM are so important. My husband and I are excited to read LIGHT with our son, and I would recommend this book for all families who enjoy reading books together that are informative and fun.

This is our second book from Arcand and Watzke and we absolutely love it. The pictures are stunning and match with the text to help you really understand different aspects of light. My seven year old daughter has a particular interest in astronomy and constellations, so anything related to the "stars" she loves, and she really liked the parts where you can see how different types of light can reveal different looking images. This book helps you understand what is going on from a science perspective, particularly if you're not a scientist, and now I can actually explain a thing or two. Really an awesome book for all ages.

About the Author
Chris Shilling is Professor of Sociology at the University of Portsmouth. He has written extensively on the subject of embodiment, and on sociological and social theory, and his publications include The Body in Culture, Technology & Society (2005), The Body in Social Theory (2nd edition, 2003), The Sociological Ambition (co-authored with P.A. Mellor), and Re-forming the Body (co-authored with P.A. Mellor). He is currently writing a monograph entitled Changing Bodies and is coordinator of the International Body Pedagagics Project.
