Amazingly realistic

I love the Dreams & Reality series. I can't say how much. I was hooked from the beginning of the first book. I read all of them in less than a week. They were all simply amazing. This one ranks high on my list. The whole team is great, as always. The characters are like old friends at this point.

One thing that happens in this book, though, is Ace's migraine takes her to a place that all chronic migraine sufferers come to. Maybe not quite to the extreme physically, but we certainly think it. As a chronic migraine sufferer myself, it was like looking in a mirror. It was a bit scary, but also validating. I can only imagine that Ms. James has migraines herself. Only someone who knows that pain can describe it so vividly. I read through these books while in bed dealing with a migraine that has now gone on for over4 months, non stop. It's called statis migranosis. It's painful and frustrating and breaks you down. I could relate more than I wanted to. My point in telling this, is that the experiences that Ace goes through are extremely realistically portrayed. I can't speak for the sociopathic part, but I'm convinced that she's done the research and it's as accurate as possible, as is everything else described and experienced in these books. The writing is downright amazing.

I look forward to more in this series. Ms. James is an amazing talent.

I really love this series by Hadena James! I always hate for the books to end..and this was no exception. This is a great series....and the attention to detail is amazing. I feel as if I know these characters personally and want to find out what kind of killer they will meet next. Ace has to be my favorite sociopath...and I like that Ms James does her research....I don't put these down until the very last word...and now I want book 8 ! :-) Thanks for another wonderful Aislinn Cain adventure...and please hurry with the next one!!

Another great book in an awesome series.

I love this series, this author and in particular, this book. There is so much going on in this book it really could have been messy but with her usual attention to detail and plot flow Hadena James turned out a story that keeps moving without bogging down. With every book we are seeing more and more of who Aislinn is and what she is about. This book is no different in that realm. At the end of each book I can only hope Ms. James is close to publishing the next.

About the Author

Philip R. Popple is Professor and BSW Director at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work. His MSW and Ph.D. are both from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. He is the author of three social work texts, and and editior of two. He has numerous publications in social work journals and presentations at professional conferences. His practice experience is in child welfare, public welfare administration and planning, and staff development. He is currently researching and writing a book on the history of social work and social welfare with a focus on the development of social work practice.

 

Leslie Leighninger is Professor Emeritus and former director of the School of Social Work at Arizonal State University. She earned her MSW at the State University of New York and her Ph.D. at the University of California Berkeley. She is the author of four books including the highly praised Social Work: Search for Identity. In addition she has published numerous journal articles and presentations.

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are fundamental to the modeling of natural phenomena, arising in every field of science. Consequently, the desire to understand the solutions of these equations has always had a prominent place in the efforts of mathematicians; it has inspired such diverse fields as complex function theory, functional analysis, and algebraic topology. Like algebra, topology, and rational mechanics, PDEs are a core area of mathematics.

This book aims to provide the background necessary to initiate work on a Ph.D. thesis in PDEs for beginning graduate students. Prerequisites include a truly advanced calculus course and basic complex variables. Lebesgue integration is needed only in chapter 10, and the necessary tools from functional analysis are developed within the coarse. The book can be used to teach a variety of different courses.

This new edition features new problems throughout, and the problems have been rearranged in each section from simplest to most difficult. New examples have also been added. The material on Sobolev spaces has been rearranged and expanded. A new section on nonlinear variational problems with "Young-measure" solutions appears. The reference section has also been expanded.

Thorough introduction to partial differential equations, very insightful

This book gives a very thorough introduction to partial differential equations. As a physicist I often encounter partial
differential equations. As a rule these equations can not be solved by analytic methods and one needs numerical methods
to solve them. This book discusses ways of understanding the existence and the general properties of solutions of partial
differential equations, without actually having to find an analytical solution. This is, however, done with many examples.
I found the sections on the mathematical methods that lead to important proofs about partial differential equations
(distributions, Sobolev spaces and operator theory) very readable for a physicist. This is discussed in a much more
friendly manner than in other books I encountered on this topic. I learned a lot from this book, and I can highly recommend it
to anyone interested in the various mathematical theories concerning partial differential equations.

Struggle

This is a good book for postgraduate maths students. Even though my first degree was in maths I still could not follow the notation given in this book. I struggled with following the material and never got to the end of the book. I will have to come back to this book in a few years once I have developed the skills elsewhere.

Lots of theory; hardly any methods of solution.

This book is apparently written for a 4 semester course in PDEs for grad students in pure mathematics. You will not learn how to solve PDEs from this book. I need to solve PDEs; not explore theory which does not lead to any solution. I recommend Strauss's book instead.

This directory of film awards from 1927 to 1999 offers full coverage of the Academy Awards as well as the prizes given out by the Golden Globes, Directors Guild, Writers Guild, Screen Actors Guild, Producers Guild, National Society of Film Critics, New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Broadcast Film Critics Association, National Board of Review, Independent Spirits, and the Sundance Film Festival. Chronologically arranged, each entry includes a critical commentary of the awards' procedures and voting, lists of nominees and winners, behind-the-scenes happenings, announcement dates and places, and one or two small black-and-white pictures. Movie Awards concludes with a two-page commentary on each of the above groups, a chronological list of best pictures (great for quick comparisons), "kudos counts" (most awards, most nominations, trivia), nonwinners, journalists' awards, voters, and a title and name index. O'Neil writes in the breezy Variety style, which makes for good browsing, but he always zeroes in on the significant factoids and quotes. Numerous excellent books chronicle the Oscars (Robert Osborne's 70 Years of the Oscar, Abbeville, 1999) or cite awards (Peter Mowrey's Award-Winning Films, McFarland, 1993), but none combines pure pleasure and fact so well, at such a good price. If ever...

...a book is deserving of an update its this one. While all the information contained here can easily be sourced online now, nowhere can you have it all put together this neatly or this conveniently. Loads of research (with a few minor factual errors) has gone into this so let's hope Mr. O'Neil is asked to correct those errors and cover the intervening 16 years of award ceremonies and results. I have no doubt it would be welcomed.

A Perfect Handbook

Thomas O'Neil's "Movie Awards" is an absolutely no lose purchase for even a casual movie maven. Serious movie fans should be enthralled. It's all here-all the important awards from 1927-1999. Listed are such disparate grantors as the New York Film Critics, the Writer's Guild, the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild, the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.
Trivia and solid information alike abounds. This reviewer was shocked-shocked!-to read that "The Searchers" was nominated for NO awards in 1956. The pages devoted to 1969 make no mention of the Hollywood aphorism that John Wayne received that year's Best Actor Oscar (for "True Grit") to make up for being bypassed in 1956. The entire cast and Director of "The Searchers" was ignored! I also learned that Clark Gable did not win the Oscar for "Gone With the Wind" and that Tex Ritter's theme to "High Noon" won an Oscar in 1952. I still believe that is the best of the themes because it was an integral part of the actual movie. A trivia section informs us that Walter Brennan won the most Academy Awards for an actor (though not for "My Darling Clementine") and William Friedkin was the youngest Director to an Oscar. For which movie? Buy the book and check page 767. The very fact that there IS a page 767 indicates that this work cannot be devoured at one or two sittings. This is a thick handbook to be appreciated over a span of time as we watch those old classics one by one. Maybe when I read the section on 1949, I will learn why "The Third Man' got 0 Oscar nominations and why the entire cast of "A Letter to 3 Wives" went similarly empty handed. I can't wait.

Incredible Resource!

Finally, we have a resource which discusses a lot of the other so-called "precursor" awards to the Oscars ... finding information on the history of these various awards has been somewhat difficult in the past. With this book, however, it's all together in one place. It's very well written, and leads you through the movie awards seasons, allowing one to see exactly how the different trends for certain films began, and we finally see the path they took until they finally took home the Oscar Gold! Definitely one of the best overall resources for those interested in all aspects of the film awards season.

This text is very good, but considering the advent of DSM 5, it needs updating. Referencing DSM-IV is useless. I would hope that a revision is in the pipeline for next semester's students.

Grade 4–6—This stand-alone sequel to The Name of This Book Is Secret (Little, Brown, 2007) combines mystery, adventure, and fantasy. On their mission for the Terces Society, 11-year-old Cass and Max-Ernest must find the homunculus, a 500-year-old man born in a bottle, before Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais do. The evil duo plans to use him to uncover the secret of immortality. The use of an overbearing narrator to create a sense of danger works in the beginning, but grows tiresome toward the end. The numerous parenthetical comments and footnotes are often laugh-out-loud funny, but also draw readers out of the action. Bosch creates sufficiently quirky, well-rounded protagonists, while stereotypes suffice for the secondary characters, with the exception of the homunculus. Cynical humor shines through in the portrayal of the Skelton Sisters, an evil tween pop group in the employ of Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. The dark illustrations, descending chapter numbers, and playful fonts will catch readers' attention. The adventures of aspiring magician Max-Ernest and survivalist-in-training Cass continue. As with The Name of This Book Is Secret (2007), the author often intrudes on the story to offer dire warnings to the reader that even reading this tale is too dangerous to consider, presumably because of a world-shatteringly nefarious secret and the evil machinations of the two young adventurers’ archnemeses, Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. It’s a clever ploy that adds a level of heightened drama to the tale, which, underneath all the trappings, has some neat elements (a “Sound Prism,” a cantankerous homunculus) but lacks many true thrills. There are still codes for Max-Ernest and Cass to unravel and secret societies to infiltrate, but the injection of a third main cast member reeks of the old sitcom ploy of throwing in a hip new character in an attempt to make a show fresh. Chapter-opening illustrations add a lighthearted touch to this solid sequel, which is more character-driven than the first, and will hit or miss depending on what readers like more, the people or the puzzles. This is a fun book with an interesting narrative. Cass and Max-Ernest are young adults who have recently been involved with a secret society, the details of which are located in the previous book in the series. Although you do miss out on some details of the protagonists, you could read this book without having read the previous installment, THE NAME OF THIS BOOK IS SECRET.

When you read IF YOU'RE READING THIS, IT'S TOO LATE, it is as though you are being told a story by the campfire.

The characters are well-developed, easy to relate to, and have a good sense of humor. Because of the short chapters and common footnotes, I see this as a great book for a reluctant reader. It is easy to pick up where you left off and it takes you down many paths at once, keeping you interested. The footnotes typically add a humorous aspect to an interesting mystery, allowing the reader to venture in a new direction before continuing on with the story.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It had a strong storyline with characters that took risks and maintained and created friendships.

Ok so read to the end of IYRTITL and you'll get it. I agree with the other reviewer who liked PB's interview with PB at the back of the book. That was hilarity worthy of...I don't know, someone hilarious! PB, I guess... These books remind me of the Benedict Society series except I think PB's are funnier and weirder... even though I like them both.

So yes, PB, go ahead and give yourself 5 stars...though I know you would, at the very least, anyways! And I hope there is a book 3.

Badly researched and full of errors; don't bother!

I found this book to be one of the worst I've read about Nicholas II. Blatant errors make it obvious the author didn't do his research, which in turn makes it difficult to take anything "new" he comes up with seriously. All in all, I'd say this book is *extremely* unreliable, and lacks any other special qualities to make it a worthwhile read. There have been any number of reliable, interesting, entertaining biographies of Nicholas II written-- I advise you don't waste your time with this one.

The fact that it was written by an "eminent historian" does not make up for the serious weak points this book possesses. Its description misleads the reader into believing the book will contain personal, detailed accounts of the last Tsar's family life, but all it contains are common general knowledge statements. What Ferro does seem to concentrate on is Nicholas's political life--particularly its failures. He seems to nitpick at the Tsar's every weak point, and the only thing Ferro does well is unfairly bash the character of this most noble emperor. This book is bland; it reads like a boorish supermarket tabloid--and just as trashy

Not only does the book have BIG print, few pages, and lots of fluff, it is both historically and culturally incorrect. It surmises that the Revoution was inevitable due to the actions of the ruling Tsar - WRONG. The Revolution occurred because of Lenin and WWI. In 1913, Russia's economy was fastest growing in Europe. She had liberalized and was coming into the modern world. Lenin's propaganda railed at military losses when in fact she was successful on 3 of the 4 fronts where she was engaged.
The section headings, "Rule by Rasputin", "Nicholas rejects the Russians", etc says a lot about the historicity of this work. It does not even explain the Revolution well and how a motley crew of foreign-trained malcontents took control of the vast Russian Empire. For a good work ont he subject of the Romanons get NICHOLAS and ALEXANDRA - excellent work.
