Slightly better than previous volumes

This is the 15th book in what was SAM Publications' Modeler's Datafile series but now is merely called the MDF Series. The book is an 8-1/4" x 11-3/4", 128 page, card cover with extensive color photos and artwork. There is also an 8 page equivalent foldout at the rear which has a six view line drawing of an F-14A in 1/48th scale. That the aircraft just fits gives a good impression of its size.

On the down side this book still has most of the weaknesses of the previous three books on the F-4. There are numerous typos("AIM-9 Sparrow and AIM-7 Sidewinder"), errors of fact ("The three stage fan rotates on the same shaft as the six-stage low-pressure compressor and the seven-stage high-pressure compressor."), photo captions which merely repeat the text word for word (some photos have the same caption), and captions that are just plain wrong (an Su-22 kill marking misidentified as a MiG-23).

But there was more upside this time around. There was a good "walkaround" section, some nice pages on the AIM-54 Phoenix missile and the TARPS pod, and a nice chapter on flying the F-14 from the perspective of an RIO.

In short, I came away with the impression that my money was not completely wasted this time around. There are many better books on the F-14 but this one actually adds a little something to the pool of published information albeit at a high price.

An author who has written 465 books unquestionably knows the craft well, and here Asimov tackles nothing less than a history of the Earth from the creation of the universe to 1945. The format is similar to Asimov's Chronology of Science and Discovery ( LJ 10/1/89): blocks of time are isolated and their events chronicled, first with theories in prehistory and then through historical records. One finishes the book feeling that history has been more the march of armies than of enlightenment. Asimov's style is crisp, concise, and devoid of jargon, and he is not above interjecting an occasional ironic or strongly felt opinion when a human foible invites one. Some, perhaps most, concepts and events are treated in an overly simplified manner, but that is unavoidable in a book that attempts to cover 15 billion years of history. Events are conveyed in broad terms, and proportionately few dates are included to interrupt the narrative, making this book as useful in a circulating collection as in reference. Its use as a ready reference tool, either to answer basic questions or as a starting point for more detailed research, will depend largely on the thoroughness of the index, unavailable for review. Those wishing for a more concise historical chronology might purchase Bernard Grun's Timetables of History (S. & S., 1982. rev. ed.); though an older title, it covers a more manageable period, from 5000 B.C. to 1978. For public, school, and university libraries.

A Must-Have

If you have any interest at all in the world you live in, you should have this book. Basically chronicling the complete history of the world from its creation until 1945, it is an amazing, concise, helpful, fun quick referance.
If you are reading a historical novel and want to check how accurate it is, this book'll help you. Want to know what else was going on in the world during this war or that revolution? Just open 'er up!
I have this book handy at almost all times when I am reading. It is compartmentalized into sections concerning individual countries or groups, not just a big mishmash of everything going on all at once, and it reads very easily, not like a school history textbook. It includes a nifty "outline" timeline at the beginning, too, so you can just skim it over without reading every word.
An amazingly hefty, helpful, well researched book that no one should be without.

Essential

Asimov's Chronology of the World is a superb reference work. Although not really (and not meant to be) a coherent narrative, it is highly readable and absolutely essential to any historical research. It is useful as a reference tool in almost any historical context; if you're not sure when something happened, or exactly what happened, consult the Chronology. If it was a major happening, it's almost certain to be there, and realtively easy to find.
Asimov does sacrifice depth for breadth in this work; many more minor events are not covered. Also, if you plan to read this work cover to cover (I did, and it was very well worth the effort--doing so gives a broad perspective on history very difficult to find elsewhere), you need a good historical atlas on hand to understand how events unfold.
The only complaint I have with this work is that Asimov did not live long enough to write the sequel, chronologizing the events from 1945-2000. If anyone has found a good book to fill this gap, please let me know!
In sum, Asimov's Chronology is the essential one-volume reference to world history. No home library should be without it.

One of Asimov's best non-fiction works

This is probably Isaac Asimov's best non-fiction history book. It tells the story of history from a simple prespective of what happened when. Lots of modern historians have gotten away from that simple approach. It helps that Asimov is not a historian in the traditional academic way. He was just a person who knew a lot about many things, one of them being history.
Coupled with his work about Science and Discovery, it makes for a good reference work that is also a good read.

A must for voice students/teachers

This book covers the history of vocal pedagogy from its very beginings to detailed discussions on the thoeries of Manuel Garcia, Lamperti and so forth. It also gives you some glimpse on other techniques that were brought into being, backing them solidly with proofs to why the old italian school of voice production was and still is the most natural and favourite. It gives detailed description on the vocal technique itself with description of how the larynx works and so forth. (the title makes you think its only history but IT IS NOT! It is what one calls a professional down to earth book which talks about the practical but it is not an exercise workbook!) I never found a book so detailed in describing the many 'things' that are part of this technique so well put and easily understood. it also talkes about idiom and expression in the voice. Makes you love technique and not be bored just by reading about it, makes you appreciate this great gift our culture has handed upon us, to continue to nurture it in our own little ways. The Language is very well written - serious, steady and professional. Presentation is excellent. Points well made and clearly understood. This book has so many good virtues, that words just cannot measure what I mean to say. for me, it is THE definate voice bible I have been so long waiting for, both for my thesis and vocal studies! Then for further reading, I suggest J.T. Caldwell Expressive Singing Dalcroze Eurhythmics for voice. It sort of contiues where J.Stark leaves off as regards to discussing expressivity. With this later book Please be careful cause I was greatly dissapointed with the damaged one they sent me (without any reply when I complained) but nonetheless, a good book is a good book - sufferes a bit with presentation though.

The Real Music History

This is the finest, most complete "true" history of music that I have ever read. If you have taken music history classes and this text was not included, your classes have led you into an instrumentally dominated world of delusion. If you want to know the truth behind the development of music outside the instrumental track, this book is a must. Learn the truth about the domination of singers from the dawn of the professional singer in the late 16th century to the dominance of the singer throughout history up to today. This is the type of knowledge that music historians in general do not want you to know!!

Those who would continue the tradition of beautiful singing owe it to themselves to include this book in their libraries. detailing the early days of Bel Canto and the findings of the first great masters, through the modern day and incorporation of science into the art and study of singing, this well-researched manual is chock-full of informative and enlightening historic facts. In spite of its 'all facts and no fluff' content, the book is an easy, pleasing, entertaining read.

Fantastic presentation of part of the history of Buddhism

I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I studied a lot of religion in college, enough to complete a second major. Some of my favorites were Eastern religions, including the teachings of the Buddha. I think this graphic novel would have been a fantastic addition to my Religions of the Far East class and I will be reaching out to my professor to consider it.

This graphic novel illustrates many of the main points of the teachings of Buddha:

"He realized that some things cannot be overcome with wealth or power - namely, the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death." (Page 50)

There is also information on the history of Buddhism as well as the explanation of the different branches. What I really like is that Nichiren is not just some fictional character whose fictional life is used to teach a lesson. He was, in fact, a real monk. While the story is embellished by the authors to include some less factual information, the point is this graphic novel is based on a very real historical figure.

During Nichiren's lifetime, his homeland was plagued with a lot of natural disasters, including widespread illness.

"Natural disasters are unavoidable, but human beings must have strength to overcome them and wisdom to move on with their lives. Negative thinking, however, can prevent people from summoning this inner strength and overcoming obstacles. Moreover, Buddhist scriptures offer the insight that disorder within human beings is reflected as disorder within society." (Page 62)

He felt that a common problem with the current Buddhist way of thought was the following of The Pure Land school of thought. This practice taught disciples to just give in to date and accept it so that they might achieve their place in The Pure Land. Nichiren found this to actually be a negative practice and petitioned for a return to the spirit of the Lotus Sutra. He felt that one should not just be governed by fate but that people should still attempt to improve their lives. Like many religious leaders before him, he was met by excessive resistance from leaders of his religion.

Many attempts were made on his life and Nichiren held fast to his devotion, willing to die for his beliefs. It's interesting that he was exiled twice and so many attempts were made on his life but the government that couldn't stand him was not able to silence him.

The author has kindly provided a link to a website about Nichiren for further information. My interest has been piqued and I look forward to finding out the whole truth about Nichiren and his teachings.

Unfortunate negativity toward other forms of Buddhism

I would give it less than one if I could. I have enjoyed readintg manga versions of the lives of other Buddhist leaders; Just as You Are is a very nicmanga about HonenShonin, founder of Jodo Shu and teacher of Shinran, the founder of Jodo Shinshu for example. There is also a good one about the 14th Dalai Lama, and Higashi has published a multi-colume manga about the life of Shinran. SO I was looking forward to reading this one about Nichiren...right up until it made some really negative comments on Pure Land Buddhism. This book does Nichiren a dis-service. It's a real shame that one school of Buddhism feels it needs to build itself up ny saying nasty things about another equally legitimate form of Buddhism. I won''t even end up donating this to my local library, as I think it would be unfortunate for this to be some young persons's introduction to Buddhism.

It's not perfect, but still enjoyable

If you're interested in a biographical manga here's something for you. It's not perfect, but still enjoyable.

I don't read many biographies, so if I'm actually reaching for one I do have some expectations. In this case, I was more interested in the setting rather than character, although the blurb caught my attention enough to read the story.

It's all about the monk who decided follow other Buddhist teachings then most of Japan. Because of that, he was outlawed, chased and punished. He had some faithful followers, and thanks to the mantra he chooses to follow, he managed to stay calm and happy throughout his life.
The story itself is nicely written and well drawn, but don't expect a fascinating read and action packed story. It's supposed to be based on a life of a monk after all ;). Most of the "action" happens when Nichiren convinces others to follow the same sutra as he does. Most of the people he meets follow him quite easily, I'd even say too easily. Actually, the more I think about this story, the lower rating I want to use, but it does deserve these 3 stars.

The "bad" characters in this book were portrayed as very simple minded, they instantly believed in what someone told them. They instantly wanted Nichiren dead or imprisoned. Names of both authors seem Japanese (although at least one is a pseudonym) and yet the characters they portrayed didn't behave like they were in Japan. Everything seemed rushed, thoughtless, almost mad. When you imagine a person from Japan it's usually someone calm, reasonable, someone who hides their feeling (yes, I know these are stereotypes, but it is kind of true. I can honestly say I found no person like that in this book except Nichiren.
One of the issues I had with the graphic is that the characters didn't change. Maybe the authors thought we wouldn't recognize them, but if you show a pair of kids and after ten and more years they look and behave exactly the same and even wear the same clothes it's simply not right. I know some people have troubles with recognizing manga characters, it seems this style requires from readers some getting used to, but it doesn't mean we can't see the characters evolve.

As far as historical biographies go this was OK, but I think I was expecting more. I did like the graphic style. I do like manga ad since I haven't read any in a while this was a nice change from other graphic novels. I even didn't mind it being black and white, although I might've added half star for some colors. After all, if you'll think about all the fancy kimono's you could find in old japan it might've been a treat.

Overcoming Demonic Influences in the Believer's Life

This book focuses on demon oppression and spiritual warfare in the believer's life (as opposed to demonic influences in the lives of unblievers), making it a unique manual. It is written by a formerly Baptist minister, now with Fuller Theological Seminary, so it is ideal reading for those Christians who come from a non-charismatic background who believe that Christians cannot be bothered by demons. It is well-grounded in Scripture, and calmly written, making it markedly different than some sensationalistic books that hype up this area and focus on excessive emotionalism.
If you do not believe that demons can affect Christians, or if you suspect they can, but don't know how, this is the book for you. It is meaty, and in-depth, repeating common themes so that they can be absorbed, not just read about.
If you are a Christian and have been bothered by recurring or troublesome problems in your life and/or those of believers around you, and can't figure out why, this book will have many answers for you. I think it should be required reading for every committed believer, or every believer who wants to be an overcomer, truly free in every area of his/her life.
The main purpose of the book, aside from information and understanding about this area, is to motivate believers to have the courage to step out in ministry in this important area. It establishes a Scriptural basis for this, and walks you through beginning in basic, everyday ministry.
I learned so much, because I knew little about demons, but was very afraid to find out. This book allays your fears, and teaches you the truth from the Word of God so that you will not be afraid. It gave me the courage to step out; in fact, today my husband and I prayed about some issues and it worked! Of course, God always comes through, but it was exciting to have the encouragement and training so that I could have the confidence to take this important first step---trying for the first time. If you are in any type of ministry, even "just" in your home to your family, and are afraid to begin or don't know where to start, this is the book for you.

One of the best books available on this subject

If you'll refer to my other reviews, you'll note that I've read a number of other popular works on this subject . . . most of which have been substandard (at best). This is the best I've seen so far.

What I liked most about Mr Kraft's book is his sincerity, practicality, humble nature, and the fact that he is significantly more openminded than his peers. Furthermore, this book was obviously the result of many years' experience, and the information was presented well and pleasant to read. For the most part, it was a very good book.

What I did not like was his opinion (which seem to be shared by all fundamentalists) that practically everything which has origins in a non-European culture is demonic. Such things include, but are by no means limited to: yoga, martial arts, accupuncture, meditation, and probably even incense! Furthermore, all other religions (including those nefarious Unitarians!) seem to be demonic as well.

As all other authors I've read seem to agree, Kraft is of the opinion that most (but thankfully not all) character flaws are the result of demonic influence. However, he does state that many self-proclaimed "exorcists" oft see demons where there are none (such as in cases of emotional instability or mental illness).

Please note that this is NOT a book about exorcism! It is about the concept of "deliverance", which is a far less intensive procedure, similar in many ways to hypnotic suggestion (which most fundamentalists agree is of the "demonic New-Age black arts").

I would like to repeat that, despite the 3-star review, this is the BEST book I've seen on the topic so far. Mr Kraft makes no extraordinary claims, makes so false guarantees, and freely professes that there is much about the subject that he does not know. This was a refreshing change from the arrogance and paranoia seen elsewhere.

Mr Kraft is an honest and kindhearted man who has studied these matters all his life and speaks with great eloquence -- even though he is mistaken in a number of his opinions. If you are looking for a working text on Christian deliverance from negative influences (real or imagined), this is the book you want. Some of the other books out there are true abominations which will poison your mind with paranoia and hatred, doing far more harm than good.

A must for in-depth fighting of dark powers

This book re-iterates some of the points from Dr. Kraft's other book Deep Wounds Deep Healing, however it does go through in detail about the categories of demons, their powers and how to detect and fight different levels of demons. It is very helpful to anyone involved in this type of ministry.
