A new take on paranormal romance....

I'm not going to lie, when it comes to paranormal romance books, I can be a bit critical. I mean, there's only so many times I can read practically the same story about a passionate yet dangerous werewolf or a sparky vampire before rolling my eyes at the predictability of it all. This book, however, was not predictable in the slightest. I will not reveal the entire supernatural premise of the book because part if the fun is figuring it out as the main character does, but what i will say is that it is utterly unique and I have yet to read anything similar to it. The romance between Zane and Piper is also unique in that their interactions were natural and entertaining and not stilted and awkward like you might find in other romances. Piper's internal dialogue will make you laugh out loud, and Zane's frustratingly gorgeous good looks will have you swooning at the turn of every page. All and all, I gave this book five stars because it captured, and held, my attention for the solid three hours I spent reading it. Can't wait to read the sequel!

Needs more editing.

The world building was great (though I wish the accents were explained) and the plot was intriguing and original. I'm only taking two points off because the constant one liners and vulgar exclamations felt forced and tired after the second chapter or so, and also there were a ton of mistakes. Misspellings, wrong words (rouse instead of ruse???). I don't know if Weil has no editor or if the editor is horrible...but I hope this issue gets fixed before she publishes the sequel.

Needs serious proofreading

I'd call this a 2.5, really. The world-building, fine. Certain plot twists are obvious well in advance. The romance, meh. There's no reason for Piper to even like Zane except "OMG he's super hot!" plus some stuff about their souls resonating, but seriously he's such a jerk that it should have completely turned her off him. And did anyone else feel like they were reading Twilight? Hot, broody guy acts like a jerk to the main character, has a supernatural secret, and holy s*** sneaks into her room while she's sleeping! Just...no to that one.

And the typos! Spellcheck only checks that a word exists. It does not tell you whether the word is the correct one for that sentence. Replacing "compromising" with "comprising" can be put down to a brain fart or a slip-up on the keyboard, but the author also seems not to know what certain words mean. Case in point, describing a character as "hassling with himself." I couldn't even figure out what word she meant to say.

I dunno about reading the next book. My gut says not, although my mind would probably be changed if the typos were fixed in the Kindle edition. At least then the story's merits would probably be enough for me to want to find out what happens.

Add Pizzazz To Your Magic

Nobody likes a boring magician. So why are there so many of them? One reason could be that they haven't read this delightful book of inventive card magic that puts the focus less on clever revelations of selected cards and more on just plain entertaining the audience. Don't just show off your presumed power over your audience, add pizzazz to your magic and learn valuable tips on routining your card tricks. I highly recommmend this book by a master of the art. I've had this book on my shelf for over 15 years and am always returning to it for inspiration. The illustrations alone are worth the incredibly cheap price. Like the rest of Dover's wonderful catalogue, the book is superbly bound and will last for many years. Highly recommended.

The tricks are fine, but the book is lacking

This is a catalogue of card tricks, plain and simple. There's no foreword, no afterword, and no general discussion about performing magic.

It runs through about 100 different tricks, explaining each one. For each description, any hints and advice that Annemann cares to share are woven into the text. The tricks range from somewhat dull to very good, and involve various levels of preparation (including none at all).

Personally, I thought that this book wasn't very good. The writing is confusing in some parts, and consistently dull. In the edition I have, the typeface changes inexplicably at a couple of different points in the book. It seems as if they literally photocopied the pages from two earlier books and threw them together in this volume without bothering to match the type.

As a repository of tricks, it's serviceable, but I see no reason why the consumer wouldn't get a little more bang for his buck by purchasing a reference book that includes some discussion, and which has been put together with a little more care.

Not for the weak

Ted Annemann's material has long been held up as classic because of the great skill with which he performed it. If you are truly serious about the kind of magic you might want to perform and you are not just beginning, then Annemann may be just what your looking for.

About the Author
Since co-founding the U.S. Green Building Council in 1993, and serving as its CEO since 2004, Rick Fedrizzi helped create the global movement for sustainable buildings and communities. He oversaw the creation LEED--Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design--the premier green building program, which certifies almost two million square feet of building space per day in more than 150 countries, and has accredited nearly 200,000 LEED professionals worldwide.
 
Rick is also the CEO of Green Business Certification Inc., and the chair of the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark. Additionally, Rick serves on numerous boards and advisory committees for diverse organizations, including Harvard University's School of Public Health, the Clinton Global Initiative, Bank of America, and the World Green Building Council, which he chaired from 2011 to 2013. 
 
Rick was previously an executive with United Technologies' Carrier Corporation for twenty-five years. A native of Syracuse, New York, he holds a BA from Lemoyne College and an MBA from Syracuse University. Rick lives with his wife, Cathy, a public school teacher and lifelong educator, in Syracuse.

is not only good business, it's Business 101

It is refreshing to find a green-leaning author who is willing to admit that capitalism does not have to be the enemy of environmentalism. In fact, just the opposite. Mr. Fedrizzi points out that there is profit, there are jobs, and there are technological breakthroughs aplenty waiting for any entrepreneur (or company) willing to just pursue them. It only stands to reason that with natural resources in diminishing supply, and with supply and demand driving industrial wholesale prices (and the cost of doing business) up and up, that protecting the earth's resources, adopting sound and sustainable manufacturing and building practices, and keeping the supply side of this equation as robust as possible for as long as possible, is not only good business, it's Business 101. In fact, even though the idea of capitalism and environmentalism walking arm in arm down the aisle together is completely out-of-the-box thinking, it's a logic that is as irrefutable as it is sound. Pick up this book and read it cover to cover. I promise you, it will make you view environmental responsibility in a whole new light.

It’s fast-paced, highly readable, and has a remarkably smooth flow as Fedrizzi moves from the power of branding, to air pollution in China, to green schools. Best of all, it walks the line between taking the issues seriously, while maintaining a positive, optimistic outlook. All due respect to Mr. Gore, there is nothing inconvenient about the truths laid out in Greenthink. This is a powerful call to action to rethink and reframe global climate change.

I'm not an environmentalist, and have never been in business for any length of time. I do feel I've been around long enough to know how things work. I friend of mine gave me this book after a discussion about the environment. He said read, so I read it. It really makes sense so it's hard to believe that more people and especially businesses haven't latched on to this premise of the book which is, protecting the earth and result in huge profits. If more people would read this book, the money thing would drive the train and Rick Fedrizzi's ideas wouldn't seem so revolutionary. It would become commonplace.

About the Author

Theodor Fontane (1819–1898), novelist, critic, poet, and travel writer, was one of the most celebrated nineteenth-century German men of letters. He was born into a French Huguenot family in the Prussian town of Neuruppin, where his father owned a small pharmacy. His father’s gambling debts forced the family to move repeatedly, and eventually his temperamentally mismatched parents separated. Though Fontane showed early interest in history and literature—jotting down stories into school notebooks—he could not afford to attend university; instead he apprenticed as a pharmacist and eventually settled in Berlin. There he joined the influential literary society Tunnel über der Spree, which included among its members Theodor Storm and Gottfried Keller, and turned to writing. In 1850 Fontane’s first published books, two volumes of ballads, appeared; they would prove to be his most successful books during his lifetime. He spent the next four decades working as a critic, journalist, and war correspondent while producing some fifty works of history, travel narrative, and fiction. His early novels, the first of which was published in 1878, when Fontane was nearly sixty, concerned recent historical events. It was not until the late 1880s that he turned to his great novels of modern society, remarkable for their psychological insight: Trials and Tribulations (1888), Irretrievable (1891), Frau Jenny Treibel (1892), and Effi Briest (1895). During his last years, Fontane returned to writing poetry, and, while recovering from a severe illness, wrote an autobiographical novel that would prove to be a late commercial success. He is buried in the French section of the Friedhof II cemetery in Berlin.


 
Douglas Parmée (1914–2008) was a lecturer in modern languages at Cambridge and a Lifetime Fellow of Queens’ College. He translated many works of classic and contemporary literature from French, Italian, and German, receiving the the Scott Moncrieff Prize for French translation in 1976. NYRB Classics publishes his
translations of The Child by Jules Vallès, Afloat by Guy de Maupassant, and Nature Stories by Jules Renard.

Inevitably Irretrievable

This is one of the best books I have ever read, possibly because we all have known people just like those described in the story. Fontane is sort of a German Anthony Trollope in that he describes the ordinary lives of his characters and thereby reveals their personalities. The setting is in Schlesswig, and the characters are members of German/Danish nobility, but that really doesn't matter; they could be from any walk of life. What matters is that each of them has a personality that interacts with the others to lead inevitably to the final outcome. The events that take place serve mainly to cause the facets of these personalities to become revealed.

The translation flows well and transmits Fontane's delightful irony that suffuses the book. Occasionally there was a line that caused me to laugh out loud; Fontane has a wonderful sense of the absurd. This may not be a book to everyone's taste because the characters form the plot and because the characters are revealed by their reactions to everyday events. That can be boring to some readers, but each event, though seemingly unimportant, has an effect on the ultimate outcome. Whatever you do, don't give up part way through; it needs to be read to the end.

Cold

I'm very sad to say that I could not finish this book. I gave up on page 90 (out of about 250), and about half of those ninety pages I read just to give the book the fairest chance I could.

I bought the novel after reading a glowing review of it in the New York Review of Books. Even more persuasive was the fact that Thomas Mann loved Fontane's writing, and I love Thomas Mann's. Alas, these were false signs. The NYRB review focuses on the relationship between the husband and the wife in the story (as does the synopsis on the back cover), but in fact the novel deals with a lot of political and social issues conveyed through dialogue that is trying hard to be lively but really isn't.

The dealbreaker for me in the end was the fact that the story didn't make me care about what happened to the characters. All the people in this novel are strangely lifeless. In theory, they should be fascinating, but on the page their thoughts and emotions come across as fabricated, not authentic. It's as though Fontane reasoned his way through this story rather than follow its natural, more intuitive direction.

It pains me to admit that I can't even say that I dislike this book. That suggests some emotional involvement with it. I simply don't care about it. It leaves me cold.

A Pearl on a Cloudy Day

This book is a pearl on a cloudy day -- a lovely story of an avuncular, hen-pecked Count and his irritatingly pious wife in their castle in Denmark by the sea. It is a Victorian (1871) book of manners set in Victorian times (1850s) but it reads as lightly and humourously as any contemporary novel.

"Origami em Flor"--a little bit different

I became familiar with Flaviane Koti's origami on Pinterest and her website. So, I ordered the book and began to study Ms. Koti's style of folding. This book is challenging. I've found some of the projects to be too bulky after they are completed due to many unnecessary folds. It's a fairly interesting and challenging book for experienced folders who are looking for a different style of origami.
