Martell's What Do We Know about the Celts? (Peter Bedrick, 1993), for a slightly younger age group, contains much of the same information and has a similar format. This new publication is better organized, richer in historical detail, and contains many more drawings, and, of course, the intriguing transparent overlays. It fulfills its purpose of providing easily acquired, visual and textual material for reports.

The catechism-style queries heading the 17 topical spreads here may seem a bit off-putting, but they're an admirably direct approach to information and subjects likely to interest children- -not only concerning ``what'' is known, but how the surviving evidence can be interpreted. On each spread, a brief paragraph addresses the question at hand (``Did the Celts go shopping?...[not] like we do. Instead, they grew their own food...However, luxury goods such as jewelery [sic] were bought...''). Extensively captioned photos and drawings of artifacts and reconstructions amplify the information on crafts and trade, origins and tribal movements, family structure, beliefs, and more. Like a well-crafted exhibit, an inviting introduction that offers a good sampling of objects with real stories to tell, together with lucid explanations of how these can be read (Martell even cautions that contemporary descriptions of Celts ``were written by people who thought their civilizations were better than the Celtic one,'' and gives an egregious example from Julius Caesar). Remember the Celts

This book is just one of many in the Myths and Civilization series. Myths and Civilizations of the Celts is nicely organized, condensing the long history of the Celts into less than fifty pages. The book is divided into sections; each section begins with a fable and is followed by illustrations and two pages describing the different origins, beliefs, legends and societies among the Celts. A brief description of many Celtic stories such as the Legend of Maon, the Tragedy of Cuchulain, and the Tale of Peredur is also provided.
The history of the Celts is rarely studied. Particularly in this day and age when countries are overwhelmed with equality and compensating minorities for the atrocities committed against them. It is essential to learn about all cultural, ethnic, and racially distinct groups, particularly those living within a larger group. Minorities have been subjected to the most abuse and humiliation. It is important not to forget the culture of the majority for the majority has its own traditions, beliefs, and legends essential to its existence. One day the present majority will be a minority.

Buy this for the illustrations

As an elementary school kid, I checked out this book ( and Robin Place's The Celts) from the library over a dozen times to stare at the illustrations. The illustrations are all drawings in color, very vivid and full of detail and human emotion. Of course it isn't great art--but it sure could set a kid's imagination on fire. There is on illustration of a trader leaving on an expedition, turning back to wave at his family standing by their home. It is full of illustrations like these, that are very easy to relate to. As a 10 year old, the pictures really made me realize history was "real" and that people back then were human just like us.

Actually, I was more inspired by these drawings then by the more glitzy DK Eyewitness series. The Eyewitness series is all photographs of artifacts or dressed up actors standing stiffly with emotionless faces...so it doesn't make history feel alive at all. These illustrations do. The drawings are still stuck in my head, more than a decade later. Also, check out Robin Place's The Celts (MacDonald Educational People of the Past Series), those drawings are even more poignant.

Great Atmospheric Paintings

This is a good book for seeing what effective use of masking can do for a painting. Mr. Roycraft's use of masking is an integral (if not THE prime) technique for creating the numerous paintings demonstrated in this book. The other technique he uses is pouring the watercolors onto the surface rather than painting most of it with a brush.
This is not a painting method for anyone not willing or able to know precisely all the places to mask. The sparkling waves of an ocean in one of his paintings must have taken quite some time to mask and most likely needed a detailed pencil sketch beforehand. While the pouring is imprecise the masking is not.
The book has 1 chapter that gives a step-by-step demonstration of his pouring method. One can tell from some paintings produced that this can be a time-consuming method of producing watercolor paintings if the subject matter is intricate or detailed although the results are breathtaking.
I would like to see more demonstrations from Mr. Roycraft and perhaps more details about the masking as part of the process. Statements such as "I masked only the light areas before beginning the painting. This is negative painting in reverse and makes a beautiful abstract pattern." show the thought that guides the final results.
Most of the book shows paintings in a semi-finished state with the final result and some comments on the process and thoughts in creating it. I liked this book very much and would recommend it to any watermedia painter because it helps thinking in terms of positive and negative shapes and light. It also introduces a unique way of painting with watercolors which I suspect would work with fluid acrylics as well.

Light up your paintings big time

Wow! Where was THIS watercolor book hiding? The techniques Roland Roycraft shares here are seemingly easy; splashing or flowing paint onto paper, masking and more. He also gives some very good hints for composition with clear details. Also value sketches (black and white, showing the density of darks and lights. This is a valuable technique for painters.)
I may not choose to imitate Roycraft's style, but I sure will be incorporating these techniques into my next paintings. If you want to improve your watercolor, I can't recommend this book and his other book on nature enough. They are just great.

What an amazing painter!

I bought this book hoping to learn how to paint in a similar style of the author. There is a great deal to learn in this book. It is far beyond my painting abilities at this point, but I love the book and the very detailed explanations of the many wonderful watercolor paintings of Roycraft. He very thoroughly walks you through his painting process, so an already skilled painter will enjoy the challenge of this technique. Knowing how he achieved such beautiful painting puts me in awe of him. Almost the only time Roycraft uses a paint brush is to apply the masking fluid to the painting. The color effects are created by pouring the paints on to the paper, and then manipulating the paper to control the color. He makes several pourings, letting each one dry before applying the next. He is a master at composition. The atmospheric effects he creates through basically using a palette of red, blue and yellow are amazing! The book is filled with beautiful color reproductions of his paintings, and a thorough explanation of how he created each piece.

This is a wonderful book, but beginning painters will find it very difficult to achieve satisfactory paintings using his technique.

Takes Functional Lab Testing to a New Level

I'm absolutely in love with this book, it takes a deeper look at implication of lab tests and the metabolic imbalances that can be found within "normal" lab values. It goes further to explain additional topics such as detoxification pathways, lipid metabolism, and what I like to refer to as metabolism "misadventures". The fact I was able to find a used copy in excellent condition at a fraction of the retail price was all the more satisfying.

A brilliant self-coaching book - very useful.

Strangely the books has been wrongly called on Amazon "How to Live Your Dreams" although the book is actually called "How to Make Your Dreams Come True". This book and Mark Forster's other book "Get Everything Done and Still Have Time To Play" is great. A short and very useful read - the concepts are easy to grasp and the book won't take long to get through so you can rapidly get on with applying the practical methods to your own life. There is an easy to follow plan that summarises the steps and exercises to go through to learn and consolidate the methods shown in the book. He uses the unusual method of dialoguing with his imagined future self who coaches him to become the person he wants to be, working towards a personal vision so you can actually "see" the methods being demonstrated as you read the book. I found this fascinating as the process unfolded. Coupled with this he suggests really easy and quick methods of getting stuff done, goal setting and feeling better and more positive about your life and the goals you want to achieve. Mark is cool, because he is so down to earth and doesn't pretend to be perfect. I can see why he has recently been nominated one of the top 10 coaches in the UK by the Independent on Sunday newspaper. The book is written with honesty, humour and is very, very practical. Most of all the methods really work. I highly recommend this book.

Amazingly realistic

I love the Dreams & Reality series. I can't say how much. I was hooked from the beginning of the first book. I read all of them in less than a week. They were all simply amazing. This one ranks high on my list. The whole team is great, as always. The characters are like old friends at this point.

One thing that happens in this book, though, is Ace's migraine takes her to a place that all chronic migraine sufferers come to. Maybe not quite to the extreme physically, but we certainly think it. As a chronic migraine sufferer myself, it was like looking in a mirror. It was a bit scary, but also validating. I can only imagine that Ms. James has migraines herself. Only someone who knows that pain can describe it so vividly. I read through these books while in bed dealing with a migraine that has now gone on for over4 months, non stop. It's called statis migranosis. It's painful and frustrating and breaks you down. I could relate more than I wanted to. My point in telling this, is that the experiences that Ace goes through are extremely realistically portrayed. I can't speak for the sociopathic part, but I'm convinced that she's done the research and it's as accurate as possible, as is everything else described and experienced in these books. The writing is downright amazing.

I look forward to more in this series. Ms. James is an amazing talent.

I really love this series by Hadena James

I really love this series by Hadena James! I always hate for the books to end..and this was no exception. This is a great series....and the attention to detail is amazing. I feel as if I know these characters personally and want to find out what kind of killer they will meet next. Ace has to be my favorite sociopath...and I like that Ms James does her research....I don't put these down until the very last word...and now I want book 8 ! :-) Thanks for another wonderful Aislinn Cain adventure...and please hurry with the next one!!

Another great book in an awesome series.

I love this series, this author and in particular, this book. There is so much going on in this book it really could have been messy but with her usual attention to detail and plot flow Hadena James turned out a story that keeps moving without bogging down. With every book we are seeing more and more of who Aislinn is and what she is about. This book is no different in that realm. At the end of each book I can only hope Ms. James is close to publishing the next.
