This book is great for review. I love the way the cases are organized by organ system and the questions for each case covers the spectrum of differentials as well. The answers/explanations give all the pertinent details for distinguishing different diagnoses. I love this book!

The vignettes and questions are very helpful. I find that it's a good way to practice for boards. I used another study book to review and using this one to test my knowledge. The rationales are straight to the point and give you good information. Even though I'm studying for acute care pediatric nurse practitioner boards I think it is preparing me well.

Peter Scott, Principal Lecturer in Accounting and Finance, De Montfort University

Peter Scott is a Principal Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at De Montfort University, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. He An undergraduate personal tutor, he has been awarded a Vice Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award on four occasions following nominations by his students. Prior to De Montfort, Peter trained with Grant Thornton, Chartered Accountants, where he also gained post qualification experience, before moving into industry at Ashfield Holdings Plc. Peter has presented various academic papers on the subject of auditing at several conferences in the UK, and has jointly authored published papers in refereed journals. He has also undertaken writing assignments for the ACCA, CIMA and the CIES International University Network (University of Neuchatel, Switzerland).

About the Author

RAVI VASUDEVAN is Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi, India, and co-initiator of Sarai, the Centre's programme on media and urban research. He has taught Film Studies at universities in India and the USA, and held fellowships at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, the School of Oriental and African Studies and Princeton. His articles have been widely published, anthologized and translated. He is editorial advisor to Screen, founding editor of BioScope, a journal of South Asian screen studies, and edited Making Meaning in Indian Cinema (2000).

Good book, all the right people hate it

Alice Marwick's book is a great ethnography of the start-up culture of Silicon Valley. She spent years as an observer, and she has an informed view on the tech culture she immersed herself in. Her chapter on the rhetoric of Web 2.0 was a particularly insightful analysis of how the way we view tech culture and talk about tech has shaped the ways we adopt and understand emerging media.

Marwick's portrayal of Silicon Valley is balanced, but it's definitely not positive. She paints a picture of status seekers who sound like they're straight out of an Edith Wharton novel. She also shows how the start-up, libertarian mindset also contributes to crazy labor practices that hurt workers. She talks about how workers put in crazy hours and take less money because they are enraptured by the relatively few "Web 2.0" success stories we're all familiar with. It's useful to note that her book pissed off a bunch of tech commenters (in various comment sections), so if you're making people mad it means you're doing some solid work and willing to look critically at your object of study.

The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars was that it was a bit theoretically light in points. Still, read the book. It's entertaining and worth the price of admission if only for her take down of silly self help books about succeeding with social media.

my daughter's book

I guess you might say I am strongly biased towards this book because my daughter is the author. But I am not a techie, just have some computer experience and use facebook and twitter etc. So, I was a little worried as to whether I would understand the book at all. I just finished it a couple of days ago, and have to say that it is so well written even a non-geek like me can understand it. Parts of it are sad really because the book points to the downsides of being a "celebrity" in this world of which she writes. Alice was researching this field as she was studying for her Doctorate and she made many visits to San Francisco to meet with all kinds of people in the industry there. She has some wonderful interviews and stories from those in the tech Web world, and then goes on to make some excellent observations. Women's studies were part of her undergraduate work so it is fascinating that in this book, she discovers the whys and the wherefores of the male-driven web industry. Her interviews with many of the women are very telling. Again, a few of their stories are a little sad, and some of the women don't seem to recognize that they are only exacerbating the issues against themselves. Anyone in the industry or anyone who uses media like facebook should read this

Fascinating look at Silicon Valley's Insiders!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I must say that it did take me a bit to get into this book. I put it down for a while, thinking it was going to be a really heavy read. But, it turned out to be quite the fascinating book! It was a lovely walk down memory lane for me, with names like Kevin Rose, Veronica Belmont and Leo LaPorte! Many others are mentioned, but these happened to be the most familiar to me. The author refers to them as micro-celebrities. They are "famous" to certain people, and are expected to be more accessible to their fans than are Hollywood type celebrities. She takes the reader with her to the glitzy parties and day to day lives of these people. Also explored are the wannabes and how they attempt to integrate into the scene!

The latter parts of the book explore topics such as micro-celebrity in detail, along with life streaming and self-branding. Very well written, it flows well and is easy enough to read! Highly recommended for those interested in the inner workings of the people in Silicon Valley.

Phil Edgell has worked as a fish culturist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada at the Robertson Creek Hatchery on Vancouver Island. His prize-winning underwater photographs have appeared in many publications including Pacific Diver, Western Angling, and Nature Canada.

Long known as the definitive fish ID book for divers.

What kind of fish was that we saw? What should we be looking for? Where do we look? What haven't we seen yet? Even experienced divers run into fish they haven't seen before or can't immediately identify. Knowing what to look for and where to find it makes for more dive satisfaction. Essential text for medical devices entrepreneurs and innovators

I am a recent graduate of the Stanford Graduate Student of Business and have worked in the life sciences industry for many years. While at the GSB, I took the 2-quarter BioDesign class which used a beta version of this book as its text. The course - and text - has a rather ambitious aim, namely to explore the medtech entrepreneurial and innovation process and to do so in a cross-functional, comprehensive, and hands-on fashion. As one of the more popular courses at Stanford and one that has resulted in numerous new VC-funded start-ups, I think they have succeeded in this goal.

More so than entrepreneurialism in other industries, starting a new business in medical devices requires bringing together many disciplines and functions, including engineering, medicine, and business. This book takes this comprehensive view of the process. You'll learn about:

* Medical - learn about the clinical trials process for medical devices (e.g. 510k / PMA) ... learn how to put together a clinical development plan & clinical trials plan

* Engineering - learn about prototyping, produce concept definitions, R&D strategy

* Business - learn about doing a market assessment ... how to put together a reimbursement strategy ... how to do a marketing & business plan ... how build your financial models

But more than just looking at the individual disciplines, this text looks at the innovation *process*. That is, it walks through idea/concept creation and screening, researching new clinical need areas, and important early due diligence (i.e. IP searches, researching unmet medical needs, doing a stakeholder analysis). Then, once you have your concept it takes you through developing your early prototype and putting together a development and business plan. Next, it discusses how you will want to go about pitching this to VCs and obtaining funding to implement your product. And finally, it touches on operation issues and exits once your product is launched.

The book is highly readable and is accessible to a wide range of backgrounds and knowledge levels. This is because it was designed to be a text for a course that was taken by b-school students, engineering graduate students, and med school students. Additionally it is very hands-on, and discusses the tangible *things* that need to be done as you go through the start-up innovation process, and includes numerous case studies. Some chapters are rather dense but these can be skimmed until you actual need to reference the material.

On caveat is that, while I think this text can be relevant for people that are interested in innovation and start-ups in biotech or other areas of life sciences, it is clearly targeted to medical devices & medtech.

Being a successful entrepreneur in medical devices requires a thorough understanding of each of these steps in the innovation process and all of the cross-functional disciplines that are involved in bringing a new innovation to market and to patients. This textbook understands this and tackles this topic with that principle in mind.

Fundamental resource for medical device engineers

As a medical device engineer with experience at both small and large companies, I was skeptical whether one text could be considered a go-to reference for medical device design. After a year of of experience with the beta version of this text, my doubts were allayed. The text is thoughtfully and logically laid out in a step by step approach to designing medical devices. One particularly unique aspect of this book, is that it provides a well-balanced blend of medicine, business and engineering in its approach. This is largely due to the extensive experience of its authors and their collaboration in its creation. The case studies provided in each chapter provide "hands-on" examples of the key information. For me, I found these sections the most interesting and the most inspiring to read. I found myself reading the case studies first and then going back through the rest of the chapter text to pull out additional information.

As I have found with only a handful of my engineering texts ( admittedly, I have shelved my Vector Calculus and PChem texts), I find myself constantly pulling this text off my shelf and referring to it--particularly for the extensive list of resources that are included at the end of each chapter. It has taken so much of the guess work and internet searching out of the equation!

There are so many unknowns and potential pitfalls in the development of medical devices. This text is a key tool to entrepreneurs who would like to avoid and/or prepare for as many of these unknowns as possible!

Filling a Big Void in Medical Technology Innovation

Stanford University has been a leader in facilitating the creation and development of medical technology companies. A unique relationship has existed for a number of years between academic medical center and its engineering, science, and graduate business schools. The University also benefits from its location in the heart of Silicon Valley.
