The stories were nice. Even for shorts, though, the characters were underdeveloped and short-sided. The syntax was bad, as well. It was a nice read all in all, it just needs a little help (maybe a good editing.)

New translation a gift

Stanislavski's "My Life in Art" was written in haste during the Moscow Art Theatre's 1922-24 European and American tours and translated into a language he neither spoke nor understood by a mysterious individual (J.J. Robbins) with less than satisfactory credentials for the job. For nearly a century this has been the version available in English and for the most part anywhere in the world outside of Russia. But upon returning to Moscow Stanislavski continued to write and revise the book which was later published in Russia and considered by Stanislavski to be both definitive and the version he was satisfied with.

Thus, Jean Bendetti's new translation of the Russian version is a welcome and valuable gift, not only to actors and the theatre but to art and artistic endeavor in general. Much is the same as the original Engligh version in terms of content, but much is also new and different, never before available in English. Of particular interest are the appendices recounting Stanislavski's more personal memories of Chekhov and the later European and American tours.

An important aspect lost in the previous translation was Stanislavski's personal, conversational tone, which is how the book itself was written; i.e. Stanislavski spoke and what he said was scribed. Thus, a whole new feeling comes of this translation that is extremely valuable, if not priceless. It is nearly impossible not to feel that you know Stanislavski very personally after reading the book. Particularly in the last section (the appendix of the European-American tour) you feel as if he has spoken to you personally about the entire experience. As such the voice and personality of this great master speaks and can be discovered once more in a way that has previously not been possible. This alone is more than worth the price of the book.

Indeed this will be a valuable and cherished volume for years to come, if not an entirely new rejuvenation of what was in its time a classic, historically influential and historically significant work.

Before writing his opus manual on acting technique, Stanislavski wrote an autobiography he hoped would detail his life and philosophy - but his publisher insisted on many cuts and changes to its length, resulting in a diminutive version Stanislavski hated - and completely revised for a 1926 Soviet edition. Deja en Paz al diablo.

The writing is taut and slick. Love his intricate plot, told from the vantage points of several familiar characters.
I feel, that I know these people.
I read several of John Verdon ebooks, and I appreciate immensely his intrigues. The guessing of who's done it will keep you incapable of leaving the book.
Excellent read, as usual !

Misterio que se estanca

La novela policial requiere de acciones que vayan avanzando, dando la sensación de que el investigador se acerca paulatinamente a la resolución del misterio y que, por lo tanto, cada vez hay más peligro y tensión. En esta novela, eso está bastante logrado al comienzo. El misterio es atractivo, lo ritual del asesino en serie resulta llamativo y la figura del detective, con su pasado a cuestas, resulta cercana y creíble. El problema es que a lo largo de la historia el misterio parece no avanzar. El detective razona admirablemente para rebatir las teorías ajenas, pero nunca logra elaborar con claridad una propia. El peligro no se percibe como una amenaza cercana y las víctimas que se van acumulando son personajes lejanos para el lector. Creo que en cierto momento la historia se estanca y la solución al conflicto se da por una acción poco racional -lo que menos se espera de un detective literario-. Resulta fácil de leer, los diálogos son fluidos y resulta una lectura amena. Pero a mi parecer, falla en aspectos centrales de lo que se supone es el género detectivesco.

De las tres novelas esta fue la que mas me gusto mantiene la intriga y el suspenso desde que empiezas el primer capitulo hasta el final que por cierto me sorprendio saber quien era el asesino, lo recomiendo y si les gusta las novelas policiacas en serie esta es una de ellas

Quick read, good references,

I'm a stay at home mom and previously a pre school teacher and I decided to homeschool my three girls 4 and under. I was looking for a book with ideas and positive experiences and this book has it. I wish there were more tailoring towards specific activities but the general concepts the author gives are great non the least. This furthers my wants to homeschool and I was happy to see she shares my views on socializing, pure coincidence but it still made me happy. I think many parents who question how a homeschool child will be socially acclimated without being in a public classroom doesn't remember being in a public school where there are few opportunities for children to socialize, typically teachers are instructing and noise in a large classroom is kept down so children can focus. My children get plenty of social interaction from soccer, dance and Sunday school.

Just a short little manuscript that doesn't really yield any real "stress busters". The author has several grammar mistakes and uses the 's incorrectly many times. Unfortunately not worth the purchase for me.

this was the perfect support I needed...

I have read many books and done much other research on blogs and websites about homeschooling and I truly feel like this was probably the best book I have read that gives real ideas and how to homeschool. I think the "not knowing if your are teaching your children all they need" is probably the greatest stressor of homeschooling and this book helped take that stress away by providing real-life reminders of struggles you probably will face but that its part of the process and wonderful coping strategies and ideas. Most importantly she reminds you that learning should be fun for parents and children and that is key for even daily success in your home. Although a short read, I hope here is more wisdom in homeschooling coming from Ms. Wallace. I would buy...
