They show how similar problems were tackled in Alexandrian Greece, in China, and in India, then look at how medieval Islamic scholars shifted to an algorithmic stage, which was further developed by medieval and early modern European mathematicians. With the introduction of a flexible and operative symbolism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, algebra entered into a dynamic period characterized by the analytic geometry that could evaluate curves represented by equations in two variables, thereby solving problems in the physics of motion. This new symbolism freed mathematicians to study equations of degrees higher than two and three, ultimately leading to the present abstract era.

A Powerful and Modern Narrative on Algebra.

In recent times, much exceptional work often in the form of articles has been written on the nature and history of algebra: What is algebra truly about? What role did symbolism really play throughout its history? Are there three distinct phases in the evolution of algebra: rhetorical, syncopated and symbolic? Or only two: rhetorical and symbolic? Or should we look for a different classification scheme entirely? Excellent research is being done in many places throughout the world on these and other important questions.

This excellent and well-researched book joins this current tradition by providing one of the most powerful historical narratives of algebra that I have yet seen. In regards to its history on elementary algebra, the book strikes the nice balance between providing sufficient technical details without overwhelming the reader. It also goes into very nice depth and detail in discussing the extensive contributions to algebra of medieval mathematicians.

Another highlight of the book is its detailed discussion of the connection between the revolutionary work in algebra of 16th century mathematicians and the revolutionary work in analytic geometry, calculus and physics of 17th century mathematicians & scientists. This is a powerful and important transformational bridge that is often glossed over in many books. Taming the Unknown tackles these particulars head-on; and in an insightful and nuanced fashion that sets it apart from the pack.

The book also excels in its demonstration of how the study of the algebraic structure of equation solving in the 17th through early 19th centuries gradually transformed into the modern abstract algebraic study of mathematical structures in general.

All in all, Katz & Parshall are to be commended for having written a remarkable book. One of their stated goals is to show how the algebra of the past (much of which is now codified in the x’s & y’s in today’s school algebra courses) led to some of the modern algebra of today (now taught to “advanced college-level students”). A noble aim which, in my opinion, they have in great measure achieved.

If you are someone seeking a deeper conceptual understanding and appreciation of the history and/or structure of algebra in its many phases, then this book (written in the form of a tightly woven and explanatory story) is for you!

I rate this book, Taming the unknown, as a magnificent 5 star book.
I applaud the authors for the hard work and academic excellence
that they put into their book. To see the historical unfolding of the
mathematical roots of algebra across so many cultures, makes for
fascinating reading. The quest for solving for the unknown, reveals the
universal aptitude of scholars across Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek,
Chinese, Islamic and European cultures in giving us this heritage. This
book is a treasure to have on my book shelve.

Great book!

I actually didn't purchase this book on Amazon but I did use it for a class and really enjoyed it so I thought I might as well post a review. The authors did a great job at organizing their book as well as presenting information to the reader. Even though I was required to read it for class, I found myself not hating that I had to read for class. It's interesting to read about history from a mathematical view.

Very School-y

This is the kind of book schools recommend. More "pouring facts into the brain" rather than learning. Make sure your kid knows every proverb because that's a sign of a literate, educated person, and if you get a jump start on these your kid will appear even smarter than they really are! But, if you're the kind of parent who actually wants kids to UNDERSTAND the meaning of these proverbs, this book will do nothing to help you teach them. They are illustrated with goofy pictures that show the literal meaning of the proverb, not what the proverb means metaphorically. For that, you need more abstract knowledge, and there is just no shortcut. Better to see these proverbs one at a time, in the context of various stories where their meaning will be much clearer and where they can be digested one at a time rather than crammed into a child's brain all at once.

About the Author

Nancy K. Freeman is a Professor Emerita at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She was a member of the Early Childhood faculty and the Director of the Child Development and Research Center. She is a former preschool teacher and child care center director and worked closely with the campus child care development center while at the University. Nancy has authored scholarly publications and made conference presentations on topics such as professional ethics, service learning, and the preparation of the child care workforce. She served as chair of South Carolina’s State Advisory Committee on the Regulation of Child Care Facilities for many years and is a past president of the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE). She is a coauthor of 2 books on professional ethics published by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) as well as a regular column on professional ethics published in NAEYC’s widely circulated journal Young Children. In 2012 she was recognized as the NAECTE/Pearson Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher Educator of the Year.

 

Celia A. Decker retired after 38 years of service in early childhood education. At the time of her retirement, she held the position of professor of early childhood education at Northwestern State University and served as the program coordinator of graduate studies in early childhood education. In addition to coauthoring this text, she is the author of Children: The Early Years and its supplements and coauthor of Parents and Their Children, both published by Goodheart-Willcox Company. She has presented papers at national, regional, and state annual meetings of many professional early childhood associations. She has served as a consultant for Head Start, Even Start, and local school systems.

 

During her years of teaching as a kindergarten teacher in an inner-city school system and as a college professor, she has received many honors. In 1994, she was selected as the Outstanding Professor at Northwestern State University.

 

John R. Decker retired after an elementary teaching and administrative career of 37 years. Before entering the field of education, he served as a district scout executive for Kaw Council, Boy Scouts of America, Kansas City, Kansas. His educational career included elementary teaching positions in inner-city schools, in an open education program, and in rural public schools. He also served as assistant professor of education and taught college courses in education and supervised pre-service teachers in a federally supported college-based program. He has frequently given speeches and workshops for professional organizations. He has been recognized for his 30-year membership in Phi Delta Kappa.

Great resource for new and experienced teachers.

As this was the first college course I've taken in a long while, I was thrilled with not only the contents of the book but the way each chapter was divided. Having the description from a teachers point of view, then our reading and then the review kept each chapter relevant. I even scored on A on my overall exam.

About the Author

Dean Hawkes, Emeritus Professor of Architectural Design at Cardiff University, is also visiting professor at the Departments of Architecture in the University of Huddersfield and Singapore and Honorary Professor at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art. In 2002 he was awarded the Leverhulme Emeritus Research Fellowship to study 'The Environmental Function of Architecture'. He has had several books published, including The Environmental Tradition: Studies in the architecture of environment and The Selective Environment: An approach to environmentally responsive architecture, both published by Routledge.
