Concise, Interesting, Useful

An early and interesting book from the distinguished historian Peter Gay. This book is a concise discussion of the life and thought of Eduard Bernstein, the originator of Revisionist socialism. In addition to its nice coverage of Bernstein, this book is useful for understanding the history of the great German Social Democratic Party (SPD). The book is divided into 3 sections. Gay opens with a concise narrative of Bernstein's life up the development of Revisionism. Born into an assimilated Jewish family, Bernstein came from a modest background and became involved in the socialist movement at a young age. He became a prominent figure in one of the major German socialist groups, had to go into exile during Bismarck's persecution of the Socialists, and spent prolonged sojourns in Switzerland and England. In exile, he became the editor of the chief Socialist paper and an even more important figure in the SPD. Bernstein was an adherent of Marx and was personally close to Engels. He played a significant role in the Marxist orientation of the SPD. In the 1890s, however, general prosperity and the success of the SPD in German politics falsified a number of Marx's predictions. Bernstein set out to provide a more realistic doctrine for German socialism.

The middle of the book is devoted to a discussion of Revisionism. This includes a brief sketch of the Marxist background, a nice exposition of Bernstein's doctrines, a thoughtful discussion of the social background of Revisionism, and the reception of Revisionism in the German socialist movement. Revisionism involved abandonment of Marx's Hegelianism, including his model of history, a highly modified view of capitalism, and a strong commitment to democratic reformism and avoidance of revolutionary violence. As Gay points out, Revisionism fit well into the evolution of the Socialist movement because of the relative success of socialist trade unions and the SPD as a political force. Bernstein's ideas, nonetheless, were a source of considerable controversy and Bernstein became alienated from a number of his former friends.

The final section of the book is a concise narrative of Bernstein's later career and the history of the SPD during and after WWI. This covers the decision of the SPD to support the Reich government in the war, the great party schism, and Bernstein's principled dissent. While Bernstein did initially support the party consensus, he subsequently made the courageous decision to leave the party and dissent from the war. After the war, he was an outspoken critic who stressed German culpability for starting the war. Even after he rejoined the party and was re-elected to the Reichstag, he was a marginal figure in the party. Bernstein was equally vocal in denouncing the Bolsheviks (as was his old friend, the more orthodox Marxist Karl Kautsky). Bernstein was born just after the failed 1848 revolutions and died a few months prior to Hitler's accession to power. His life captures a great deal of the history of socialism in Germany.

Good work

Peter Gay's works on German history are always very much worth reading, and I found his early study on Eduard Bernstein useful as well. The book deals with Bernstein's life and thinking, with latter chapters focusing on reformist socialism. Now Bernstein's original works on reformism can be somewhat difficult, which is why this book is so valuable to a modern reader. Peter Gay covers the various aspects of Bernstein's theory in a clear manner without any ideological distortions, giving readers a good idea of what Bernstein was all about. The book was written in the 1950s, but as far as I can see it hasn't lost any of its relevancy.

About the Author
Jim has more than 30 years experience of climbing, trekking and teaching wilderness medicine, first aid and leadership in the Himalayas. He was doctor on Chris Bonington's 1975 Expedition, which made the first ascent of Everest's Southwest face, and on the Australian first ascent of the North face of Everest in 1984. As well as expeditions to K2 and Changabang, Jim has climbed in the UK, Alps, Norway, NewZealand and North America.

Dr Peter Gormly was a mountaineer and orthopaedic surgeon who was involved in safety, first aid and health issues in Antarctica for many years.

Great pocket field guide

Great pocket field guide! This is the one book I carry with me when hiking or skiing as it is nice and compact and very informative without being excessive, plus you don't require a degree to understand it.

Medical Advice for a medical professional

This book is a very poor first aid book for the average wilderness adventurer, rather, it is written as if you have a grasp of medical terminilogy and practices. I was expecting something a little less tutorialish. for example, it details the different types of hypothermia and their associated causes and treatment, however, it also tells you to refer back to a figure from 5 chapters previous, tells you to use the treatment you read in another chapter, and uses alot of medical jargon, like the latin name for type 1 of hypothermia which I am sure would add thrills and chills to your story when you are back at the bar telling it for the 100th time, however, they conserved a ton of space by making you roam the book re-reading things but opt to put in useless information like the latin terms only doctors probably care to know, or can use as information, in some cases, it tells you to call in a medivac chopper as part of the treatment...so, if you have an injured person, and you have access to a medivac, why would you risk treating them unless you actually knew what you were doing and didn't need a little book to tell you what to do?

Small compact, easy to understand. Great for hunting in the wildernnes or backpacking trips. I would recommend this book if you are planning any kind of wilderness trip.

There is no cohesion between any of the examples and they are ALL in the same vein as "Hello World."

The typical scenario goes something like the following:

1) One short paragraph describing the item
2) Two to three pages of screen shots showing the items as they appear after dragging them onto the workflow designer
3) Two to three pages of code dumps with comments that are so basic that they add little to nothing to the example

Repeat this 70+ times and you have this book.

As I read through this book, I was desperately looking for something to find that was useful/helpful. Unfortunately, I cannot honestly recommend this book. The book by Bukovics is MUCH better and is only a couple of dollars more on Amazon. That book offers actual explanations as to how things fit together and good examples of how to actually consume the functionality provided out of the box as well as provide a code framework that you can immediately use in your applications.

Bottom line: this book has value, but it sits around $2-$5, not the $50 that it's price tag states. Save your money and look on MSDN for tutorials and Bukovics' book for more in-depth insight into WF.

Cooking on Workflow

Having very little previous experience of Windows Workflow and needing to evaluate Workflow products currently on the Market for a new Project we are starting at work, I was after a book that would quickly get me engulfed in Windows Workflow with numerous examples. And that is exactly what this book did. Within a few Pages of starting the book the author has the reader designing workflows.

The book nicely builds on the readers knowledge starting with building basic workflows and then moves into more complex workflows, including using WCF, transactions and building their own custom workflow Activities. The author finishes up with details on how to deploy the workflows and build a custom designer.

Whilst building custom activities the author takes the reader further through creating their own Activity Designer. The activity Designer allows end users to interact with the workflow activity as though it was an existing out-of-the-box activity in an intuitive way.

One of the best chapters is the final chapter on creating a custom workflow designer. The author builds on each example in this chapter to develop with the reader a fully functioning Custom Workflow designer. This designer can then be integrated into the readers existing solutions and allow end users to modify the workflows in a familiar non Visual Studio Environment. The author also shows how visual tracking can be enabled, which allows end users to see what step in the workflow is currently executing.

Don't let the small examples fool you, each one delivers something new and builds on the readers knowledge, allowing the reader to have a broad understanding of what is trying to be achieved without getting bogged down in boiler plate code.

This book is definitely aimed at a reader with no or very little Windows Workflow experience, but certainly by the end of the book the reader will have a lot of experience and be able to design and develop their own Workflow.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone starting out or just wanting to get a feel for the capabilities of Windows workflow and what can be done with it. I will keep on coming back to this book to remind myself of concepts.

Worried at first - but worth every bit of what I hoped for

At first I was a little worried about getting this book as it supposedly being too simplistic. I have 3 other books on WF now all of which do very good, but sometimes you just need to see the examples in a very simple light to see how to set such things as endpoints etc... Andrew does a very good job of providing just that. A simple hello world of how to use various topics in WF. If you are just starting out in WF, this would be the first book to get. From what I have noticed there is a lot of new vocabulary in WF coming from a normal C# environment that this book gets you used to. I would recommend the other WF books as well since they give the reader or larger world view and more integrated examples.

What I like about this book is that by providing simple examples, you can play with the what if without having to disect the whole project just to see what how the one thing worked. He also does a good job a building up the concepts as you move through the various parts of a chapter. This is one of those books that you should code while you read, and not just read and come back to.

While one may find all of the examples somehwere on the net or at MS, this keeps all of them in one place with the explanations in one place for easy reference. This is particularly usefull when you need to go back for a quick refresher on a particular topic.

Good for the price

It was exactly what it advertised. 48 pages for 99 cents. It was a good read. I really liked that it gave glimpses of both his and her views/thoughts. That is always nice/important in a story. I did find the end to have a bit of a twist or as one reviewer said it 'took a leap'. But I liked that- hello, this is a story. I thought it made it interesting. Especially for a short little story.

Love those Aliens

Human female agent enroute to prison on space ship, escapes to planet with a alien male prisoner. They must survive the wilds of the planet, the evil reptile aliens who wish to send them back to prison, and most of all She must survive KenJa which is when the Alien Male goes into mating heat. Lots of fun. Well written.

Short but fun

This story was incredibly short which meant that there wasn`t much of a build up of character to the relationship between the hero and the heroine. They were basically thrown in together by being the only two people on a deserted planet and having to deal with his need to have sex or die. So there wasn`t much of a story there.

It was still a fun read. It was hot, of course. I wouldn`t have expected any less from Bernadette Gardner - the author of one of my favorite alien/human books Hunter's Moon. But it was also well written and all in all a fun read. A few hours killed with a great little story.

This book is a mess

I don't have the first edition of this book, so I can't compare it to the second editon. My guess however is that this second edition was very hurridly updated to cover Labview 2011 from some eariler version. The book is riddled with errors. The text will reference wrong figures, programs you are supposed to create are described verbally and the block diagram will be missing, block diagrams of programs are present with no description of how they work. When you are attempting to learn something as complex as Labview and the tutorial material is full of errors, the learning curve gets about 100 times steeper, you end up wasting a lot time trying to figure out why the program you just implemented from the text does not work, thinking of course that you did something wrong. Don't waste your time with this book.

Find a different book!!!

Book is terribly worded and constructed. Didn't help that my professor sucked at teaching too. But if your getting this for a college class and expect to learn LabVIEW on your own, choose a different book! We learned LabVIEW better on YouTube. Very disappointed.

Not very helpful

I purchased this book to learn about implementing design architectures for data acquisition in LabVIEW. The author covers state machines in some detail but leaves the other designs like producer consumer to a very brief and cursory introduction. This book is titled "Introduction..... ." It is just that, an introduction.
