A Little Book That Stirs Big Thoughts.

We usually look upon our world as a normally ordered place where everything works as it is expected to - flowers bloom, babies are born, airplanes fly, etc. We take it all for granted without much thought or examination. After reading Dr. Goenka's book, "Does The Atom Have A Designer?", in which he describes the marvelous Atom with its interacting particles, I can not help but look upon my world, and indeed my very existence, with renewed wonder and mystery. This is a little book that can stir big thoughts.

The complexities of the Atom, "the building block of matter" - of material existence - and what it accomplishes, raises greater questions of "why," and "how," the Atom functions at all. Could something so perfect and intricate, Dr. Goenka asks, come into existence by chance, or by Design?

Dr. Goenka can not answer the mystery of the Atom for us, nor does he attempt to, but by examining the functionality of the Atom with its constituent subatomic particles we are led to ponder deeper questions.

The physicist can take us to the outer edges of the matter world, to the very exotically named particles such as quarks and leptons and gluons that comprise it. But further they are unable to go as scientists. Here, rather, the baton of inquiry is handed off to us. After all, it is only we who can give meaning to our existence - or not.

Great read!

Dr. Goenka makes a very compelling argument. The building blocks of our entire known universe are proof that there is a "Designer." He makes what I consider a formal proof. He takes you from the initial question using current knowledge and logically moves forward to the end conclusion, all the while using current evidence. While it is a relatively small amount of text, each sentance moves your mind to the next step of the proof, making it a dense but quick read. It is an extremely logical and compelling work of writing. I applaud Dr. Goenka on his work and I look forward to other works to come.

Thought Provoking Look at the Atomic Sructure.

There is a lot of argument about whether the biological world has a design indicating intelligence behind that design. Does the Atom have a Design? asks if the basic building blocks of the inanimate universe, the atom, has a design. Although as a physicist I knew the parts of an atom, I had never thought about how amazing it was that the components which one would think are incompatible form a very stable entity we call an atom. I think Dr. Goenka gives a good argument that it took an intelligent designer to bring those components together.

Entertaining enough I immediately downloaded the second in the series.

At a 116 pages, this was a perfect little novella to read at 2 a.m. The main character, Hunter Black, is snarky and more than willing to admit that he was a bit naive when things got started for him. He comes off as a very believable hero in training. Must admit, though, I spent a good portion of my time going “Oh, c’mon! Seriously?! You idiot!” That, though, is not necessarily a bad thing because it means it had sucked me in.

Confessions of a Monster Hunter: The Veil of Innocence was definitely entertaining enough that I downloaded the next book in the series to read whenever I get a free moment. I’ve never read the Dresden files, but from what I’ve heard of them, I could see people making a comparison here.

My favorite character was definitely word-man. The way Guindon describes him, I was able to perfectly visualize him, and somehow he fit into the story even though most of the other monsters described were decidedly run-of-the-mill fantasy creatures.

I wouldn’t say I highly recommend this novella, but it was certainly a fun read.

The book was really good, but it ended abruptly and the next book is unavailable. I feel like a junkie that needs the next hit. It was so good I read it really fast and I don't want to be finished. I can't wait to get the next book.

Small, but powerful

This small paperback book is powerful. Hurnard provides the reader with a different perspective about intercessory prayer. I have read it once, and now I am going back through it to recapture the points that jumped out to me. If you are struggling with your prayer life or want to learn about having a prayer life, God's Transmitters is a good book to read, and to keep on the shelf for a reminder.

Thomas Chapple is a licensed elite-level USA Cycling and USA Triathlon coach. He has competed at the national level in downhill mountain bike racing, and regionally in road and track. This book unlocks the keys to racing success!

AWESOME!!! Thomas Chapple shows that he is a very skillful teacher!Base Building is right on the money! It takes you through step by step of creating a stronger, healthier, and fitter bike racer. The logic behind the concepts are sound and based on science. The style of writing is understandable & witty. You will feel like Thomas is having a conversation with you. It's like having your own highly qualified coach with you whenver you need him. I still find myself referring to the book often. I have read many different cycling books and this is the only one that dedicates in itself to the most important step of training: the base period. Thomas sheds considerable light on a topic few really understand, he makes very applicable to the needs and expectations of each rider. If you bought only one book on training this should be the one. After reading "Base Building", all of the previous books that I've read on training for cyclists make alot more sense to me. Well Done Thomas!

Outstanding Book to Improve Your Fitness

I'm a recreational cyclist, getting in a ride a week at best of around 25-35 miles, while otherwise hitting the gym 2-3 times a week. I was frustrated because my speed wasn't improving, my weight loss had bottomed out (although I knew I could lose a bit more,) and I often found that I was getting head colds and such every could of months. Then I found "Base Building for Cyclists".

I've read this book cover-to-cover, and applied Chapple's philosophies. My cycling endurance and speed has improved, I lost another 8 lbs of unproductive body fat, and I got even more excited to get on the saddle and out on the road.

Chapple's approach is simple: Riding hard all the time will not improve your cycling performance. He proposes a program of training that starts out slow and builds from there. How you train depends on what areas you need to improve. I needed to build my endurance, and learned to ride slower to train my body to burn fat using carbs for the fire, rather than just burning the carbs. Results: longer rides and faster speeds after a few weeks of progressively harder rides (and no more over-extending and getting sick!)

It's an interesting book in that you're way past page 100 before you get to the training plans. He spends a lot of chapters giving you the background you need to develop your own program. This is good - you understand what to eat and when, how to balance aerobic and anaerobic training, where strength training fits in and what exercises to do, and how your body processes food for your muscles. He does all this in a very readable form. To me, this is outstanding.

While he does discuss how power meters can be applied, he also recognizes that not everyone can afford this technology, and gives you enough tools to get by with as little as subjective judgment. I recommend at least investing in a heart rate monitor if you really want to improve.

This book is great if you want to train to compete in races. However, it is also good for the recreational cyclist who wants to improve his performance and skills and keep up (or pass!) his friends.

Helpful even for a new cyclist

I bought this after reading recommendations on Amazon preferring this book over Chris Carmichael's book which I had read at the library and was considering purchasing for myself.

I am fairly new to cycling (this is my second season riding) and I do not race - I was looking for something to help me understand how to develop my cycling fitness and how to ride stronger, farther, and eventually faster.

This book has been very helpful. Good explanations of the underlying principles and ideas of training, especially base training. Really emphasizes that "less is more" and the importance of "riding slower to get faster."

Specific, concrete ideas and advice about setting up a structured yet flexible training schedule; and advice about modifying training based on amount of experience (beginner like me, intermediate, or advanced), on one's personal response to training loads, and one's personal training goals. Includes information on strength/weight training.

I am glad that I purchased this book instead of Carmichael's book which, altho' interesting and helpful for me initially, was not as specific or detailed as Base Building for Cyclists.

About the Author

Raul D.S.G. Campilho was born in 1979. In 2003, he graduated with a college degree in mechanical engineering at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Portugal. He completed his M.Sc. degree in 2006 and his Ph.D. degree in 2009, both of which at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto. Campilho currently serves as an assistant professor at ISEP, where he teaches mechanical engineering. He is an active researcher in numerical modeling, finite element methods, cohesive zone models for fracture behavior, natural and artificial composite materials, and adhesive joint design.

Don't buy for e-store help

This isn't helpful so far to my e commerce site. His is a content site for weight loss. I really need help with directing traffic to my store. Therefore, I would need to modify everything to fit any of his ideas into this setting. I may as well write my own book at that point.
