Charles K. Cowdery, author of Bourbon, Straight: The Uncut and Unfiltered Story of American Whiskey, writes about American Whiskey for The Malt Advocate and WHISKY Magazine. He wrote, produced and directed the public television documentary "Made and Bottled in Kentucky," and is editor and publisher of The Bourbon Country Reader, the only publication dedicated exclusively to American whiskey. As a marketing professional, he has worked in and around the American liquor industry for more than 25 years. His other books include Blues Legends (Gibbs Smith), 20 profiles of notable blues musicians. He is also a marketing copywriter and attorney, and lives in Chicago, Illinois.

Going to Church

If you want to see advertising for bourbons, this isn't the book for you. But if you want the story of the bourbon industry, then this is like going to church. You'll get the plain and simple message from the author. This book is now part of my liquor library as the new starting point for my knowledge of bourbon. Enjoyed it, five stars.

Aged in the wood.

It isn't hard to tell when a book is written from piles of research material strung together in a daunting mass. It is equally evident when an entire field of study, wed in the wood, is melded through a lifetime of experience, aged into a narrative that flows so naturally, it issues from the very core of the author. The latter is the case here. From a complex history of chemistry and business decisions is distilled a work that is both complete and readable. Mr. Cowdrey is on his turf here, and it shows. Observations in "Bourbon, Straight" are certain, forceful and backed up not just by facts - but by thoughtful deduction only years can (but do not always) provide. That said, the book is no polemic. The wit and dryly humorous wisdom are winning. When describing one particular whisky, Cowdrey murmers "They possess that ineffable (and much overrated) quality known as smoothness." Highly recommended.

for Mr. Cowdery's bourbon book. A very accessible introduction to the topic but filled with information that will educate the aficionado as well. Extremely well-written and researched. Simply a pleasure to read. I only hope that a sequel is forthcoming that will collect more of his outstanding reviews of bourbons currently on the market. You just can't do any better if you want to learn about America's native spirit.

About the Author
Dr. Donald H. Cunningham, professor of English and coordinator of technical and professional communication in the Department of English at Auburn University, is author of a number of college textbooks. He has served as president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and was founding editor of The Technical Writing Teacher (now Technical Communication Quarterly). He also has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Conference on College Composition and Communication. He is a fellow of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and the Society for Technical Communication. He was awarded the Society for Technical Communication Jay R. Gould Award for Excellence in Teaching Technical Communication.

Dr. Thomas E. Pearsall, professor emeritus and former head of the Department of Rhetoric at the University of Minnesota, is author of a number of college textbooks. He has served as president of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and is the founder and first president of the Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication. Dr. Pearsall is a fellow of both the Society of Technical Communication and the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing. He is listed in Who¿s Who in America and the Who¿s Who is the World.

Dr. Elizabeth Overman Smith, associate professor, associate head, and coordinator of instructional technology in the Department of English at Auburn University, has worked as a writer, an editor, and a trainer for organizations providing computer-related training. Great book

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This is a great book for someone who is looking to beef up their business writing skills. I really like it as a 'reference' manual. It shows examples of how to write and communicate in the business world, basically what to and what not to say and do.

It is also easy to read and understand, which is a big plus for an educational literary work.

Could use some updating.

This is a good book to give you detailed information on different kinds of writing you might do at an office. The only problem with the book is that it was written in the early 2000s, making for a very boring computer chapter, because they were talking about how to use different programs like we have never seen a computer before. I think that this book needs to be updated, especially the chapter on computers, but other than that, definitely a good resource for everything business related, including reports, resumes, e-mails, memos, letters of all kinds, among other things.

Excellent clever and clear

This is the best origami book I have seen. From the well-written glossary of folding terms to the very simple progressive diagrams for each project to the truly fun projects---hands reaching out of a box to fold some origami, an origami flying pig, an origami skull... this book is extremely well done. We all need it in our libraries. Just reading the table of contents will inspire great library programs. It'll also make a perfect gift for older kids and teens who like to work independently and accomplish things. I am definitely giving it to a friend who has been sitting around with a broken leg.

The book, which is quite beautiful in its layout and design, has what every origami lover is looking for. It has straight forward instructions and a fold guide in the beginning of the book for folks like myself who are too lazy to look up the different kinds of folds. This is Scott W. Dale F. Eickelman is Ralph and Richard Lazarus Professor of Anthropology and Human Relations at Dartmouth College. He is the author of numerous books, including "The Middle East: An Anthropological Approach" and "Knowledge and Power in Morocco" (Princeton). James Piscatori is Professor in Muslim Politics at the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies, University of Oxford. His books include "Islam in a World of Nation-States" and the edited volume "Islamic Fundamentalisms and the Gulf Crisis"

Best Introductory Book

Whenever someone comes to me wondering where they should begin when it comes to studying modern politics with an eye towards Islam, I inevitably point them towards this volume.
One of the reasons that I do so is that, not only are the two authors widely respected in the field, the both come from different backgrounds. Piscatori I would roughly describe as a political scientist known for his work on Islam and the modern creation of the nation-state. Eickelman is a long established anthropologist who rose to fame working in the Maghreb. The resulting integration of both the politcal and the anthropological is about as ideal as one can get. Since Islamism has the fascinating quality of not being merely political but also being a religious movement employing and revolutionizing the use of tradition and cultural icons of Islamicity, the perspective of anthropology as a part of any attempt to grasp its dynamics I have found to be crucial.
Here, you won't find the top 10 terrorist hit-list or a chart graph of all the members of Hamas, but you find a much more profound and broader picture of how tradition, religion and modern politics intersect with multifarious results in numerous global regions and some of the mechanisms at work. In general, it is an excellent work for gaining the tools with which to critically approach such phenomena in various Muslim societies across the globe.

Fantastic Introduction to Muslim Politics, Theoretically Informed, Global in Scope

Finally here we have an introductory text to Muslim Politics that does not focus on the Arab world and treats what are in fact the more populous Muslim regions in South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Africa as the "Islamic periphery." Instead, the book recognizes these regions as being right at the core of Muslim politics. Readers are introduced to Muslim politics through the lens of a social science that treats Muslim politics as one among other political phenomena that can be studied and grasped with the tools and concepts of contemporary sociology, political science and the sociology of law. Readers are guided through the transformation of religious authority in the Muslim world, the emergence and political projects of Islamic movements, the diverse meanings of Islamic law and an Islamic state, the contextual notions of what is "the private" in Muslim societies, the transnational character of religious practice, and the use of Islam in struggles for political change, liberalization and democratization. A superb overview. Few other authors could provide it with such deep knowledge and such a wide variety of examples to draw on, from Senegal to Oman, Turkey to Indonesia, Turkmenistan to Tanzania, Lebanon to Malaysia. Emphatically recommended.

A balanced account of the subject. Perhaps 'too nice'

In Muslim Politics Dale Eickelman and James Piscatori have studied the idea of a Political Islam from a broad perspective. The title of the book itself betrays its breadth as it suggests, through the use of the plural 'politics' and the adjective Muslim - practitioner of Islam - rather than Islam itself, that Islam is a dynamic and evolving set of beliefs that have varied in time and space. This suggests that there can be no single explanation to account for the rise of Muslim politics and that a multiple criteria must be used to analyze the phenomenon. The book presents a number of arguments in its six chapters with examples from all over the Islamic world and among these are Tradition, Objectification and Fragmentation.
The authors challenge Modernization theory's contention that tradition is irreconcilable with social and political development and the idea that Islamic legal frameworks may not be altered as they have been conceived as a reflection of divine revelation. They also show that references to the Islamic past are used as rallying points or symbols from which to draw inspiration for change in the present. My main concern and the reason I have not awarded a full 5 stars is that the authors seem to neglect or have chosen to ignore the very real violence that radical islamists have caused. No mention of Algeria -90-present, Egypt and the numerous terror attacks of the last decade, the mindless policies these groups often support, the Taliabn and a host of other less than ideal versions - at best - and downright abominable conditions that prevail as a result of many Muslim Political interpretations.
