A very easy read. The author uses a unique way to tell the story and use basic concepts which readers can understand and relate to as well. As a manager it really helped me to understand how to motivate my employees by just listening to them and being compassionate about their work. Also by not being just being a manager but a leader, which is what I want to be. If you are struggling with how to motivate your employees and the loyalty from them, then you must read this book. You think in the beginning it's a little quirky but continue reading it will all make sense in the end.

An excellent tool for leveling up the people who work for you

Zapp! is a book that my company uses in the management training seminars we give to employees who are taking on management responsibilities for the first time. Lessons on empowerment are told through a fictional (even science fictional) story of managers at a large company coming to understand why their organization is so disfunctional. The story, although initially pretty hokey, serves nicely as a landscape upon which to illustrate extremes of highly successful and highly unsuccessful management techniques. The people on my team who have read it have learned quite a lot and are applying the learnings regularly. It is not at all uncomon for one of them to raise a concern over some a counter-productive management incident by describing the "Sapp!" that occured. And it is rewarding to hear one of them respond to a positive and empowering interaction by smiling and simply saying "Zapp!"

I highly recommend this book for people managers and leaders who want to build a healthy business organization based upon ownership and leadership.

At age 87 violinist Milstein is the last surviving member of an amazing group of emigre Russian musical personages--including Vladimir Horowitz, Jascha Heifetz, Gregor Piatigorsky, Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Rachmaninov and George Balanchinefair to call Mr. B. a musician?/no;see fix above.gs --who blazed across the world music scene for 50 years. His acerbic, highly opinionated memoir tells excellent stories about all of them as well as many others. It is also a revealing account of life in Odessa and Leningrad before, during and after the Revolution, and of the struggles even such phenomenally gifted people initially faced in making their way in the West. Milstein, as might be expected, is extremely sour about the Soviet regime, and his contempt extends to some of its most notable artists; a pity, because his views are otherwise fresh and winningused above in American Cassandra/see fix.gs , and unmarred by the excessive ego that often overcomes such memoirs. Coauthor Volkoff is the musicologist who created a dramatic book out of Dmitryper Web Shostakovich's Testament , and his skills are much in evidence here: Milstein's stories flow gracefully and are compulsively readable.

One of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, Milstein is at 87 possibly the last active representative of the important school of Russian violinists (Heifetz and Elman among them) taught by Leopold Auer befor World War I. Milstein's memoirs begin with his student days in pre-revolutionary Russia and cover his still viable concert career. Keen of memory, sharp of perception, Milstein avoids the personal details of his life, instead devoting each chapter to an individual who was either close to or admired by him, e.g., Horowitz, Kreisler, Stravinsky, and Rachmaninov, among others. As topics, they serve as focal points for numerous asides and digressions--political as well as artistic. His writing style is informal, almost improvisatory, perhaps reflecting conversational sessions with coauthor Volkov; and Milstein's blunt, often acerbic opinions and judgments pepper his anecdotes, providing lively and stimulating reading.

Milstein tells entertaining musical anecdotes

This is compulsory reading for Milstein admirers, and violinists alike. Milstein tells stories of his musical encounters with musicians such as Horowitz, Ysaye, Rachmaninoff, Piatigorsky, Oistrakh, Auer (to name a few) that are irresistable. In fact, the whole book is full of such anecdotes. For violinist, it is especially thrilling to read section where Milstein draws his list of Favorite Concerto. If you're a violin enthusiast, but do not know much about Milstein, this is reccommended. But of course, there are some drawbacks - this is translated from the original Russian version, and the English here is not fantastic all the time (sometimes, it has fishy grammar). Those who are serious in researching in the topic of violinists, I have this to say: Milstein doesn't mean to teach the reader. He is not like a pedagogue-on-paper like Menuhin in his "Unfinished Journey" (by the way,incidentally, I never managed to finsh reading the book!). In fact, some people think Milstein is mysteriously silent on this topic of imparting violinistic knowledge. Anyway, this book was not intended to teach SERIOUSLY. It was meant, actually, to entertain VIOLINISTICALLY. So long it has achieved its purpose, your money has been well spent.

Enlightening and refreshingly honest

Memoirs from one of the greatest violinists ever, Mr Milstein speaks about the great musicians and composers he knew: Ysaye, Kreisler, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Prokofiev, Glazunov, Heifetz, Oistrakh, Piatigorsky, Shostakovich, all in there!
I learned so so much about the great musicians and composers from Milstein's era from this book: not recommended but an essential and manditory posession for any musician and especially violin players.
Intriguing words indeed from the violinist's violinist.

About the Author

Peter Wallensteen is Senior Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden, since 2012. He held the Dag Hammarskjöld Chair of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University (1985–2012). He is also the Richard G. Starmann, Senior Research Professor of Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA (since 2006). He directs the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) and the Special Program on International Targeted Sanctions (SPITS). His Understanding Conflict Resolution: War, Peace and the Global System (Sage, earlier edition, available also in an Arabic translation) is used in teaching around the world. His book Peace Research: Theory and Practice (Routledge 2011) demonstrates his range of research interests and has recently been translated into Chinese. Recently he also edited together with Ambassador Anders Bjurner Regional Organizations and Peacemaking: Challengers to the UN? (Routledge 2015). In 2010, he and Isak Svensson published The Go-Between (United States Institute of Peace Press), a study of mediation efforts by the renowned Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson. Wallensteen has published widely on conflict trends, conflict resolution, mediation, prevention, sanctions and the United Nations.

Set in the Bronx, New York, in 1888, it is the story of 12-year-old Milton Daub who ventures into a killer blizzard to bring food and medicine to his stranded neighbors. Walking on homemade snowshoes, Milton doesn't realize the dangers of his mission until it is almost too late. Only when he returns home to his frightened family does the boy know how lucky and how brave he has been. Based on an actual incident which has become a part of regional American folklore, this story is an excellent read-aloud choice, full of suspense and imagery. The narrator paces the reading well, and children will follow the story easily. Sound effects such as the crack of a falling branch, the barking of dogs, and the whistling wind are used sparingly but effectively. The page-turn signal is the sound of an actual page turning. Child readers will appreciate not only the read-aloud format but also the riveting story of a true yet unwitting hero of their own age. This will be a welcome addition to read-along collections in school and public libraries.

As neighbors in need shout requests for groceries and medications to Milton from their snow-banked, second-story windows, the boy's mission grows. At day's end, he is not only able to turn his unasked-for profits over to his mother but has also saved a life. Wetterer (Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express) and her co-author craft a satisfying volume in the On My Own series, building suspense as the snowshoes disintegrate; Young's illustrations wonderfully evoke old New York City and the storm of a century. Very Interesting Book

The "On My Own History" series is excellent for below, at, and above grade level readers. This particular book elicited great discussion about selflessness, blizzards, and the time period. I recently used this book with middle school students (comprised of Regular and Special Education and ELL). I paired it with non-fiction text pertaining to blizzards. They were very engaged in the books.

I purchased this book for my 10 year old that has trouble with reading. It was a good book for his age and didn't make him feel like a baby to read it. It also has a great moral.

About the Author
Joan Melton, PhD, is a pioneer in the integration of singing and theatre voice techniques. Trained at the Central School of Drama, London, she has taught at leading drama and music centers in the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. She is an Emeritus Professor, California State University, Fullerton, and a Master Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework(TM).

Kenneth Tom, PhD, is Associate Professor of Communicative Disorders in the Department of Speech Communication, California State University, Fullerton. He trained in Vocal Performance at the New England Conservatory, Boston, and received his doctorate in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Iowa. His current teaching and research focus on performance voice, voice acoustics, and physiology.

In 1987, medical transcriptionist Patricia Pereira suddenly started receiving telepathic communications from the star Arcturus and was requested to begin a series of galactically inspired manuscripts. Songs of the Arcturians is the first of those manuscripts. Philosophical in scope, this book awakens readers to their individual and collective spiritual obligations for the health of the planet and its creatures. Encouraging and hopeful, Songs of the Arcturians indicate that changes on the Earth and intergalactic contact will be positive experiences. The essays illuminate where we are going, why the beings of light who inhabit the great star nation wish to communicate with us, and how telepathic abilities can create harmony on Earth.

About the Author
For more than twenty years Patricia Pereira had been a down-to-earth medical transcriptionist. She was the founder of the Idaho chapter of the American Association for Medical Transcription. In 1985 her concern for the disappearance of endangered species on our planet drove her to start the well-known Wolf Recovery Foundation, which helped restore wolves in Yellowstone and Glacier national parks and in central Idaho.

In 1987 Pereira's life changed dramatically. She began receiving telepathic communications from the star Arcturus and has transcribed thousands of pages that convey a message of hope and encouragement about the changes Earth will experience in the years to come. These galactically inspired pages have become the Arcturian Star Chronicles.

When asked why she wanted to publish this series, Pereira says, "I wanted humanity to see there was hope for the future, the planet, and society, and that we have the ability and the technology to make the world a better place.

The Message is More Important Than the Messenger

"Songs" is the first of four volumes the author channeled from beings of light from the 5th and 6th dimension, the Arcturians. They communicate telepathically, so language is a rather limiting means for getting their information across. The message is virtually identical to Eastern spiritual philosophies, other channeled beings like the Abraham group Seth, and mystics like Swedenborg.

These higher order beings comment on different aspects of earth, our society, energy, emotions, and animals to name a few. On the subject of love, the message is the spiritual Law of Attraction - love's energies emitted into the exterior world create like vibrations of love. Fear and negativity manifest fear and darkness. We have nothing to fear, especially death, since death is life.

An interesting note is their comments on the pyramids: they are markers for receiving and transmitting telepathic thought of precious records. In this medium, they cannot be destroyed.

Good book; good message.

Lyrical yes, but does not provide much informatiom

I found the book interesting and written in a beautiful prose.vInspiring by its beautiful craftmanship of writing, but not impressed on the facts or new information that I was hoping to get. At some point in the middle of the book I started skipping paragraphs because Of the pattern of repetition. It reads like a long mantra inspiring us to become better, attuned to higher vibrations. It highlights the poor level of spirituality in our societies and known ways to raise awareness, nothing new, nothing new. I suppose the repetitiousness is on purpose, to elucidate a state of awareness to finer states of mind.

If you have read many books on spiritual matters coming from "above" (guides or ETs) this book is just another one of them and need not be read. I was planning to read the whole saga, but decided the rest would be the same repetitious theme. Iff you like beautiful prose, on a known theme, go ahead and read it. Otherwise, don 't.

Philosophy mixed with New Earth evolutionary prophesy

In the glow of the fine poetic rhythms the previous reviewers missed mentioning the purpose of the book which is stated both in the title and the first paragraphs of the Statement of Purpose
"to announce our presence before humankind...
to acquaint you with the processes of planetary evolution...
to invite you to the stars...
to the experience of God's living presence as the focal point of your daily lives...
to guide you in unlocking and accessing the dormant functions of your minds."
In regards to point two:
"Earth is in the midst of an evolutionary event: the transposition of her material body to that of the essence of Spirit. Note well that the procedures and ramifications involved in the transformative process are manifesting galaxywide as well as within your planetary home.
Within this manuscript we will endeavor, as simply as possible, to refocus the priorities of your lives."

This is a prophetic message announcing the coming of the New Earth, the transformation of humans into a new fifth-dimensional species and the transformation of planetary consciousness as well.
"Humanity stands delicately poised before a vast precipice. Earth is about to enter the yawning portals of an energy window that is ready to lure it into the resonating hum of fifth-dimensional domains. We are attempting to entice humans to create a mass energy of common-based consciousness and to proceed to a state of Oneness in order to collectively merge with Planetary Mother as she takes her unprecedented step. We must also persuade humans to seriously consider putting to rest all activities that tamper with the rhythmic harmonies of the natural world."
Any potential reading audience should have this deeper appreciation of the book, regardless of how preachy the book may seem to some, there is good reason to take this seriously.
