DAVID J. NEUMAN, FAIA, LEED AP, is the architect for the University of Virginia, where he guides sustainability and land use planning, facilities planning and design of capital projects, and stewardship of cultural resources. Neuman previously served as University Architect and Associate Vice Provost for Planning at Stanford University, Campus Architect and Associate Vice Chancellor for Planning at the University of California, Irvine, and Consulting Campus Architect for the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Nebraska System.

easy to read but basic and committed to one type of wide open campus so the land value better be affordable

I disagree with the assumed design principles here. Admittedly, I did not attend a university that had such large venues which are obviously necessary for large classes and large groups of people but it's not practical to have unique architecture and exposed beams and large floor plates - the maintenance and repair are going to be huge. It's better to build up, to build adaptable - think converted office buildings with the plumbing placed for easy modification. While reading this, I kept on thinking that the regular maintenance crew is going to be costly for such huge spaces plus they will probably contract out for more complex jobs because the designs of these buildings will demand "big jobs" and your budget will be toast as a result.
Also, EVERY design pictured in this book made me think of Life After People (History Channel) and how that ceiling collapsed on the graduation ceremony during the 3-11-11 earthquake in Japan.

ETA: The Twin Towers were designed with huge floor plates that came crashing down on one another.
Today, a Latvia shopping mall's giant floor plate collapsed killing a number of people including a firefighter.

Superior guide to how things should have been done

Some chapters show how sports and other college facilities can be built in a more sustainable way. But one has to wonder if distance learning, which is also covered nicely in this beautiful book, won't ultimately and imminently make plans to build new facilities unfeasible.
The pictures and the context in which they are presented make this a significant book.

A broad look at campus and building planning for academic facilities

"Building Type Basics for College and University Facilities" varies from some of the other books in the Building Type Basics series because there is a broad range of facilities on the typical educational campus and the basic organization of the text is around these seven types, with each chapter is written by an expert in that area.
After introductory chapters on campus planning, sustainability and technology, and historic preservation (which is inherent to most university campuses), the text covers libraries, academic buildings, research facilities, housing, athletic facilities, social and support facilities, and cultural centers. There is extensive use of case studies, figures, and photographs, although most of them are in black and white in the print edition.
Because of the variety of facilities included, there is necessarily some loss of breadth and depth in each chapter that would be found in a book focused only on that building type, e.g. residential facilities or auditoriums.
Another weakness is that although some urban universities such as Padua and Oxford are discussed, the book considers mostly the horizontal campus, with little discussion of vertical urban university campuses, which is the form of some of the most exciting recent academic architecture, such as at Roosevelt or Baruch.
Still, this is a useful resource for anyone involved in planning, design, construction, or financing of academic facilities and campuses. Since a university campus is essentially a small town, and there is an emphasis in the text on campus rather than building planning as well as the relationship between the building types, many of these principles and ideas can easily transfer to urban planning or other sorts of campuses such as military bases or the enormous industrial-residential facilities that have emerged in China as the contemporary version of a company town or mining complex.
